All three gun manufacturers seems to have problems with their 9mm models. Glocks have the erratic ejections, S&W M&P 9mm have accuracy problems, and the Ruger SR9 has peening problems. So, if you had to pick one, which would you choose? Which one is the lesser of the three evils?

Although fabled on the Internet I have never actually had an issue with any glock. I'm sure people will share a similar experience with the M&P. the ruger is butt ugly so it would not be a consideration for me. Go with Glock if you must buy plastic.Don't take refuge in the false security of consensus.

Having shot all 3 and owned two.All three gun manufacturers seems to have problems with their 9mm models. Glocks have the erratic ejections, S&W M&P 9mm have accuracy problems, and the Ruger SR9 has peening problems. So, if you had to pick one, which would you choose? Which one is the lesser of the three evils?
Get the Glock.
End thread/
Here's why. Out of all those choices, the Glock is the easiest one to shoot accurately.
The Ruger SR9 I owned has a stiff trigger , and comes with two safeties-a mag disconnect and external frame mounted safety. Since the only safety which exists is the shooter's understanding that the trigger finger is not to touch the trigger until the sights are on target, such features are of limited purpose on a striker fired pistol. A 1911 or other light trigger weapon has a bang switch sensitive enough to justify an external safety for ND prevention, but not a DAO striker fired pistol with 7lb break.
The M&P is an excellent gun in terms of ergonomics, and is superior in shooter fit to the other options. Where it falls down is the trigger feel. S&W spent all their development money on the excellent grip frame, because the trigger's reset is undetectable in live fire. During dry fire the reset can be heard well enough, but after the blast you can't hear it, and the reset is undetectable by touch alone. At the range I let out the trigger completely because I couldn't feel it-and if that's how you're going to shoot, you may as well get a DA revolver. Combine that with the spongy takeup and the long break , and i'd consider it the worst striker fired trigger sold by a leading brand. I even rate S&W's own Sigma as a better trigger than the M&P9's ; that basic pistol has a very heavy pull, but at least its consistent and I can feel the reset.
The Glock's ergonomics CAN be a fault for some folks, but when I shot a G23 the trigger has a positive reset, a nice amount of slack to warn the beginner they're Violating Rule #1 before a Loud Noise happens, and the reset is instant and tactile. Another signifigant advantage of the Glock is accessories. Every sporting goods store in America sells Glock related parts, holsters and mags.
The other options? Good luck finding a spare mag for an SR9 at Scheels. M&P holster? Special order please.
I don't own Glocks as a matter of personal preference, but of the options you've given its the best objective choice.Last edited by SilverTauron; 10-13-2012, 9:25 AM.The more prohibitions you have, the less virtuous people will be.

I have to say that I think you're way off on all three. The S&W and Glock have shown themselves able to digest 50,000 plus rounds without difficulty. For Sale: Off Roster Handgun Moving Sale

Agreed.
Even $3000 Les Baer 1911s aren't immune from being factory turds;when people make stuff sometimes they screw up.Fact of life, as evidenced by the fact that you can google ever gun brand out there and find horror stories about them. The odds of buying a lemon are a lot less with a company like Glock who's been making basically the same gun for going on 30 years, than firms like Ruger and S&W who've had less time with their respective designs. The more prohibitions you have, the less virtuous people will be.
The more subsidies you have, the less self reliant people will be.

With all due respect I wouldn't get any. Why would you buy a gun you believe has issues?
Get a used 3rd gen S&W, 226 Sig or Beretta 92FS 9mm and shoot till you hand falls off.
Good Luck.Comment

I also would go with Glock.
Supposedly, in order to address the compliants about the M&P trigger, S&W is changing the trigger assemblies on the M&P line to have a similar trigger pull to that of the M&P Shield line, which is suppose to be better.sigpic

If you are destined to buy a lemon, it does not matter who you buy from. They ALL have lemons.
Glock has a reputation for many years of reliability, but not perfect.
I have owned S&W M&P's since 2007 and have never a single problem with any of them. People like to complain about the trigger on the M&P's, but all of mine are stock, and they are not an issue for me. Frankly, all triggers on polymer pistols suck when compared to a 1911, some are little different than others, but none are a problem for me. You just need some range time to get to know it.
The only Ruger I have owned is a revolver. I have shot the SR series and was impressed. I only know what read about the reliability...mostly good, a few lemons.
Go shoot all 3 at a rental range, and see which one works best for you.
IMHO S&W has customer service that second to none in the industry. If there is a problem, they will fix it...

Owned a used S&W 5906. That's the one pistol I bought which had 3 point jams every other magazine like clockwork. Putting in a new recoil spring and magazine reduced the malfunctions to 3 in 100.
Owned a Beretta 9000s. Gun was cocked and locked in Condition 1 with the safety engaged, when the factory safety plunger failed and the weapon took itself off safe on my desk. All I heard was a "SNAP" and next thing I saw my loaded pistol was cocked with the safety off. Had that happened in my waistband holster instead of on my desk who knows what could have been.
Beretta 92s aren't bulletproof either. In terms of reliability, that locking block is a ?. Sure Beretta's refined the design pretty well lately and the odds of an issue are low;but knowing Murphy, the one time that locking block would fail is when its a no-sh*t life and death situation. When the block fails, the gun's a paperweight.
Another note:these weapons have VERY large double stack frames. I have large hands, so managing to shoot these pistols isn't hard for me. For most people of average or smaller hand size these guns range from uncomfortable to completely unable to shoot and manage. A Glock 17 isn't the most ergonomically advanced handgun ever made, but its light years ahead of the above options. The more prohibitions you have, the less virtuous people will be.
The more subsidies you have, the less self reliant people will be.

Glocks are GTG. Period.
The Ruger SR series had some early issues. The models with a round magazine release (still have one) have pretty stiff triggers. They become decent enough after 10k rounds, lol. The newer models with the "D" shaped mag release have very nice, crisp triggers right out of the box. I agree with SilverTauron about the external safety ... you don't need it if you know what you are doing. The mag disconnect is a non-issue as far as I am concerned, but removing it is easy, legal and makes the trigger feel some nth degree better feeling.|

I carry (on and off duty) and shoot glocks for almost 20 years now.
If You want a 9mm Glock, find a nice used GEN2 (my favorite) or buy a new GEN3. NOT GEN4 unless You get a .40
GEN4 9mm Glocks will ONLY finction 100% with full power LE type ammo or with NATO ball.Last edited by ap3572001; 10-13-2012, 10:40 AM.Comment
