XDM question transferring

My father lives in Arizona and has two 9mm XDM. He wants to gift one to me. I will be there for a visit next month, can I have him write me a letter that he gifted the gun to me and just drive back to CA with the xdm, or how do I go about having him gift the gun to me? Any help is appreciated.

Short answer? No, You need to transfer through an FFL (in CA) *EDIT: [what I deleted was] FUD*

Also make sure you block the mags at 10rds or disassemble them in to "mag kits" before you bring them (or ship them) in to CA.

Unless its a .45 there are no 10 round XDm mags on the market as far as I know.

It is perfectly legal to bring "mag kits" in to the state. The XDm mags come apart very easily. There are threads on here that show you how to block the 9mm and .40 mags to 10rds.

You find a CA FFL dealer that is knowledgable and willing to do an out-of-state intra-familial firearm gift.
Once you do that, he ships the firearm to the CA FFL dealer (with a letter stating it's a gift from fatherr to son).
Once the CA FFL dealer recieves it, you 4473/DROS + 10 day wait + pay transfer fee.
After the 10 day wait, you take home & enjoy.

California allows Non-FFL transfers among certain family members within California.

The Feds do not have the concept of 'immediate family' that California does. Intrafamilial interstate transfers are legal, but still must use a California-licensed FFL.

Remember that handguns purchased from out of state, routed through a California FFL, must be on the California Roster, or the California FFL may not deliver it to the buyer.

Note the repeated use of the expression willing FFL; California FFls need not accept out of state transfers. That's a business decision, not a legal requirement.

Yes it is exempt
It just has to go through FFL
as opposed to handing it over and filing the oplaw

This was told to me by Liberian , he told me the same thing when I transferred and off list from out of state, the key word is gift here
