    How'd I do?

I went out today to make the rounds to my two local gun shops today. I've been in search of a .38 or .357 snubbie for a while now. I'd really like to score a pre-lock S&W in decent shape so I keep a close eye on the board here and try to check the shops a couple of times a week. So far, for various reasons, I haven't been able to close a deal on a snub.

So today, I go into one of the shops and there are a couple of new consignment pieces there that weren't there Tuesday when I was last in.

One of them was a S&W Model 19-4 with what I believe to be a 4 1/2" barrel. It looked like it was in pretty nice shape, so I asked to fondle it. The blueing showed some wear at the barrel end, but other than that was pretty cherry. The cylinder lock up seemed fairly tight.

The price was $450($510 out the door w/tax and DROS). I couldn't help myself. Since the gun has to be held for a 30 day background check(first I've heard of this?), I only put down a deposit for now. I won't be eligible to pick it up until March 15th. I can't wait!

So, what do you guys think? Did I make a decent score?

Good score, I'm assuming the background check is on the gun?

Not to threadjack, whats the status on your AR build? Pics?
Still waiting on my upper, argh!

Yes the check is for the piece. I'll start the DROS after the first of March.

I got my HSC last week, finally. I resisted for a while out of spite. I was told years ago that my BFSC was a lifetime deal! I never thought my State government would lie to me

In regards to emc002: My lower was just yesterday eligible for pick up. The FFL lost my original DROS form(it was taken by her accountant by mistake) and neglected to enter the info into the database. So when I went up to pick it up a couple of weeks back, I couldn't! I had to start the WP over...I'm going up Monday! The lower is all I need and it's done! We'll have to hook up once I get it together!

I believe there's something about a 30 day holding period before an FFL dealer can sell a gun that he buys from a private party. It's not a 30 day wait for the buyer but, the gun need to stay in the dealers inventory for that amount of time before a DROS can start. I may be wrong here so, I hope that an FFL dealer that actively buys and sells used guns can step in and correct me. Also, it might have been sold to an FFL with a pawnbrokers license and there might be some different regulations because of that.

4.5-inch barrel? Are you sure? Very odd. Can't wait to see pics. I'm glad you don't live near me -- if I had found out this one was at my local shop and I missed it, I'd have ruined my weekend. Good job!

It looks identical to the 19-4 in this thread(minus the red front sight): http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...ght=model+19-4

I was thinking it was a 4 inch on the way home, but after searching and finding the above thread, I assumed it was 4.5" like the one in the thread. I'm really not too concerned about barrel length, I'm just stoked to have scored it!

30 day holds are for consignments.

Yeah, 30 day hold on consignment guns. It gives law enforcement time to check to see if it was stolen or not, or so they say.

Good score! They tend to like 158gr. .38 special. Refrain from using any .357 magnum rounds under 125gr. It has a tendency to beat them up. Enjoy! c good

I've heard of that - but on the other hand, I've put a few guns on consignment at a pretty good price & had them sell on the 1st or 2nd day, picked up my cash after 10 days. Is this a state law or just business practice?

A person can buy the gun as soon as you put it on consignment, they just can't begin DROS until 30 days after the dealer had the gun, at least from what I understand.

The way I see it, if someone paid for the gun, the store will take their cut and give the seller his cut. If the buyer ends up not being able to own the gun I don't really know what happens. Maybe the gun store refunds a certain percentage but still make out with a few bucks and still have the gun to sell?

Sounds like you got a good one. I love my model 19. It has an excellent trigger. I agree with c good on ammo choice. I tend to use either .38 or .357 in 158gr. reduces the amount of flame cut.

They probably charge a "restocking" fee, let the seller keep his money, and then retain ownership of the gun. They then sell it for full price again and make more money than if the person didn't back out originally.

And I would imagine that it's only a California thing since no other states have a DROS system...I could be wrong though.

I was told I could start the DROS 10 days prior to the end of the 30 day hold and pick the weapon up on the 31st day. I hope this is the case, otherwise, I won't be picking this thing up for 6 weeks!

I also asked about what happens if the gun comes back with a problem of some kind. The salesman told me I would receive a full refund of all monies received for the weapon. He assured me there was not going to be an issue with this piece, as he had sold this piece to the owner less than 6 months ago. The owner is now selling this one off to raise funds for another buy of some kind.

Thanks for the ammo recommends. I'll pick some of each up in my travels.
