A buddy of mines inherited a extremely old GI Colt 1911 however looks like the slide froze so he wants to know if there is a way to break it down. Any ideas?

If it doesn't look like it's rusted shut, then first make sure the gun is unloaded. Point it at a mirror to check the bore to see if the gun is loaded.
If unloaded, you can depress the recoil spring plug, turn the barrel bushing then take out the plug and recoil spring. This should release the recoil spring tension.
Also, you can use the edge of a desk or table to depress the recoil spring plug and give the gun a hard push to hopefully unlock the action.
Oh yeah, got pics of the gun?

First thing: patience.
Don't wreck anything by forcing it.
It shouldn't be locked up unless it is rusty or the thumb safety is on.
Take pictures and post them.
Plenty of people on here know 1911s well enough to point you in the right direction if they can see what is going on.Comment
