      • More people are killed by .22LR than any other caliber
      • a .45 has more stopping power
      • an AK will shoot forever while an AR will foul up
      • don't use reloads for self defense or a lawyer will eat you allive
      • why do you want a Red Ryder BB gun? you'll shoot your eye out
      • we need to pass this health care thingy so we can find out what's in it

I have autos in 9mm, .38 super, 10mm, and 45 acp. I'm sure the .40 S&W would compare just fine in that pack of calibers but I don't want to buy another caliber.

I'm going to vote 9mm because it's cheaper to plink, because it's a NATO round, and because with decent shot placement, it's no worse than .40. That and I just happened to buy a Glock 17 as my first gun so I've got a soft spot for 9mm.

I am new to this. Why no reloads for self defense?

              Aaaand here we GO!

In all seriousness, because going to court is very expensive. If you think ammo is pricey, just wait until you see the bill for defending yourself from criminal charges.

"But wait, the bad guy was in my living room with a weapon. Why am I being tried?"

Because our legal system is not a JUSTICE system. If the District Attorney in the area you have the severe misfortune of shooting someone at decides you need to be locked up, they have a lot of tools at their disposal to ruin your life. If things go from bad to worse and the DA feels they benefit from putting you through a BS inquisition, reloads can be used to scare a gun-ignorant jury into thinking you just didn't think factory ammo was deadly enough for your murderous ambitions to shoot the poor departed Home Invader.
The more prohibitions you have, the less virtuous people will be.
The more subsidies you have, the less self reliant people will be.

Mostly just a matter of confidence in your ability to produce a reload that you are willing to bet your life on. I'm sure a lot of experienced reloaders can and do.

In theory, the prosecutor may attempt to make you look more vicious and premeditated by making "killer" rounds in your basement. The best defense to this theoretical attack is to choose a commercial round that has been selected by a police force (local or moderately famous) and then if asked why you chose "those hollow points", your answer is, "Because the LAPD uses them."

Is this a real issue? Never happened, near as I can tell. Do I still use a commercially loaded round used by local law enforcement in my HD/SD firearms? You bet.

Shot placement is everything and the 9mm has less recoil which makes placement easier. The 40 is ballistically superior though. Of course so is the 10mm but wouldn't want to shoot one. Then there is the 45 acp which is still my personal favorite for simple knock down power.
