Seriously, if you're remotely interested, find someone who's going and be their +1. Bring your eyes and ears, help tape, and takedown. It's a LOT of fun even when you're not shooting.

        Thanks for the input everyone!

Yeah, I will definitely go just to spectate before I try to shoot in one; I'll need some time to find holster, belt, mags, etc. anyway.

The Deadwood Boys Action Pistol Match looks really fun! Id also really love to get into something like this. I'm up in Palmdale so it shouldn't be too much of a drive. If anybody wanted to get a group together or something and meet up on one of the Saturdays, im down! See how my Colt 1911 performs in a more interactive shooting environment. Its the only handgun i have so far until i get my M&P lol

A great way to start is with The Steel Challenge.

Very simple & not a lot of movement. For someone who has not competed before, the movement with a loaded gun while the clock is running can be very stressful.

You can even shoot a 22LR pistol.

Match is the first Saturday of the month @ Piru.

Most fun matches to me are rimfire silhouette.

.22LR is inexpensive to practice with.

A decent Ruger MK pistol is competition ready with, maybe, a trigger job.

You can buy steel, popup, or swinger practice targets just about anywhere.

And, don't worry, you can shoot accurately out to 50 yds.

                All it takes is practice.

Here's what the match looks like:

You load five rounds and shoot at five targets in 60 seconds.
Reload, shoot five more in 60 seconds.

It's super fun, inexpensive, and the practice helps all other areas of your shooting.

They also have centerfire silhouette matches, too. Plus, there's similar rifle competitions

                Do it!

Practice: paper at 25, popup at 50

                re: IDPA
Just read the rules online, study the stages, get you a holster, three mag's, eye and ear protection and you're ready to rock!

It fun and hones all your skills. I find it incredibly challenging to walk and still shoot accurately.

                  Great! Man, I can't wait!

BUT! I have one, very important question that I neglected to ask earlier: where can I practice this kind of shooting (drawing from holster, shooting in various positions, etc.)?

EDIT: I shoot mostly between 35 yards - 100 yards at the pistol gallery at Angeles Ranges. It can get pretty depressing though when you miss most of your shots =(.

Buy steel targets and go to the desert???
Oaktree had the small 5 plate targets that I practice on. Most places won't let you draw from a holster though.

Your about to get hooked bro!

I'm heading down to Winton to shoot in an IDPA regional. Friend of mine that I met through IDPA wants me to go shoot uspsa with him and his wife... Don't know if I can support that habit!!!

Next month, I'll be shooting in Fallon at the state steel match. Good luck, have fun, and don't go broke!!

Raahauge's out in NORCO lets you rent your own bay and you can draw from a holster and move around to shoot. I think it runs $30 for two hours, but if there is no one waiting you can stay longer. The downside is you have to use your own targets here. They do the Steel Challenge here the second Sunday of every other month. This is a great place for a first timer.

If you are a member of the Deadwood Boys (in Piru) I believe you can use their range and steel targets on days when there is no competitions going on. Also if you do the Deadwood Boys event, you do not have to draw during the competition, you can start from the low ready. This is another great place for a first timer.

Either way I would recommend practicing your draw at home with snap caps and leave the drawing and live fire until after you have drawn and dry fired a couple of hundred times without any accidental discharge’s.

Keep in mind, my advice is free and probably is not worth the price ;-)
If I had to describe myself in one word it would be "bad at following directions"

I have been shooting at Piru for only about 5 months, so I consider myself a fellow Noob.

That being said..this is fun as hell! Holsters and mag holders and extra mags, yea that helps. But don't go nuts on spending until you have been out there a bit and talked with some of the other folks. You learn a TON from these people!

As to practice, if you become a member of deadwood boys..cheap at $85 btw, then you not only get 10 bucks off of the playground fees, but you can also go out to the range during off times for only 8 bucks and practice your butt off.

Plus, you can do many exercises at home. Draws, mag changes, dry fires.

If you are not a member, you can still practice on the range after the competition.

Come out and try it! You'll notice something too...almost EVERYONE..from experienced shooter to noob does this thing....after a bay is done and the gun is in the holster...there's this smile thing that everyone gets.....

Unless you belong to a private club, drawing from the holster is mostly not allowed. However, you can do all the dry fire practice at home with an empty gun, it's the same thing without the recoil and the noise. The longest shot you will make in USPSA or IDPA will be 35 yards, and much less than that in Steel Challenge. You should practice at 7 to 15 yards, and actually start at 3 yards to make one hole, then move out to 7, and so on.

One shouldn't forget bullseye shooting. I liken it to golf. One will never master it but the pursuit of perfection is a desirable hobby.

bullseyepistol.com is a very good resource. All you need is a Ruger Mark II or III pistol or a Browning Buckmark to start. Actually a Ruger can carry you to master rating if you let it, but most people upgrade after a couple of years for various reasons.
