Interesting, well for what it's worth, they had started phasing in the black plastic boxes when I started in the biz back in early 90's. If I recall correctly at that time the only Sig models still shipping in the cardboard box were the P230s. Everything else was shipped in the black plastic.

They recently changed their rifles from hard plastic cases to cardboard boxes.

Huh, that's a great reference thread; and I misspoke, the plastic boxes of the 90's *were* grey, not black.

early US plastic cases were made in gray color, and advertised and sold in the Sig Quarterly periodical. there were limited numbers of black color cases known to be offered, at least in 1992 via a promotion by SIGARMS; see back cover of Sig Quarterly Vol. 3, Winter, 1992. the early US plastic cases were not shipped with the handguns, and apparently were not very popular for purchase; subsequently, they are difficult (at best) to find. i have a few of the black cases, and a few of the gray cases.

in 1995 SIGARMS phased out the early plastic cases and introduced a newly designed plastic case, and it was available for sale in the Sig Quarterly's accessories section. the new case was larger, with hard foam inserts inside the case that assisted in providing a better fit for gun and magazine. the color was a light variant of black. many people describe the case as being dark gray in color, yet while it was in production SIGARMS listed/described it as being black. this case may have been used by SIGARMS to house/ship new guns before it became available for sale in 1995.

there were more variants of plastic cases to follow in later years....

This is the box my P226 came in. Purchased new in 1988 at Turner's in Norwalk to commemorate my retirement from the U. S. Navy.

My new SIGs came in black plastic boxes so I'm not sure if they went from black to blue.

Here are some other cases that Sig Sauer has had over the years.

When the company was called Sigarms, some were shipped with the following.

This grey molded case is what I believe is the earliest plastic case sent out.

A switch to foam interior cases.

And the more popular blue case with foam.

Still a Sigarms branded case, the interior foam went to a soft foam insert.
