So I wanted to kill some time the other day and stopped by a local gun store. (Don't want to mention the name of the store and cause a ruckus) I was looking at the 1911's and I asked about if they ever carry any Dan Wessons. Well I first was told by one clerk that Dan Wessons are not even California legal. Once I helped clear that one up another store clerk told me that Dan Wesson's aren't really worth the money. I was told they are at a custom gun price, but do not have the custom gun dependability. From what I understand they are pretty good value for the price. Am I unaware of a spike in their prices? Or was this just another time of a gun shop only wanting to sell the brands they carry?

You will never get my Dan Wesson. Fantastic gun, and reputation.Comment

Yeah, I always think that going to a gun store is a fun trip. I hate when I leave though because people do not know what they are talking about. The problem is I feel bad for not giving a local gun store my business, but when they seem to just be blowing smoke what can you do.Comment

Stay away from that gun store!Comment

Hhaha. I have a heard there was a point, however, when Dan Wesson were significantly cheaper. I am not sure if the price increase reflected better fit or finish or where they wanted to stand in the 1911 market. Hopefully someone with more historical knowledge of DW can weigh in on it. Either way they are fantastic 1911s.Comment

Hmm, either the gun store employee didn't know what he was talking about, or he was trying to peddle the guns he did have, and he didn't have Dan Wessons.
In my personal experience, a Dan Wesson PM7 was the gun that converted me to 1911s (I got turned off 1911s by the POS Colt Series 80 I used to have). I decided to give 1911s another try, and after some research ended up with that PM7. Well, I have a couple more Dan Wesson 1911s now (CBOB and RZ-45), and a few Dan Wesson revolver. Wonderful guns!
And as for their poor reliability... With my first Dan Wesson PM7, I wanted to see how far I could push it. I cleaned it, greased/lubed it, and then put ~4300 rounds through it over several months, without any further cleaning or lubing. Well, more than that by now, but it started giving me issues at about 4300 rounds (granted, it also went through several trips to the desert, including the two with strong winds (and lots of sand in the air)), so I cleaned and lubed it since then. I do it between every 500-1000 rounds now. Runs like a champ with no issues. So yeah, it can't be relied on, better not buy one
I ran all sorts of ammo through it during this time, including Wolf steel case FMJs (that stuff is uber-dirty), various JHPs, including the ones slated for home defense (Winchester Ranger +P, 230 gr), and various brands of 230gr and 185gr ball.
This is what it looked like after the 4300 rounds test. There was so much carbon and other crud in the firing pin channel, I'm surprised it even worked. Needless to say, it was very accurate throughout (did I mention all my Dan Wessons being very accurate? I must just gotten lucky with all of them, since you can't expect such accuracy from mere Dan Wessons
).

Well, sadly, CZ has been raising prices steadily, reflecting their growing popularity, and Dan Wesson (owned by CZ) didn't escape that trendHhaha. I have a heard there was a point, however, when Dan Wesson were significantly cheaper. With that said, they did switch from cast to forged frames around the time of the price increase. Not that their cast frames were bad, mind you. That PM7 above has a cast frame.
