    Target Master question torture

I was a little early for an appointment in Milpitas, so I decided to drop in TM to kill sometime, and see if they have anything worth checking out.

A couple guys were doing a PPT DROS. The store clerk was giving the buyer TM's typical grilling. I heard questions about squib and stove pipe and couldn't help but wondered if the guy asking the question has ever had 1 of those incidences happened to himself.

I mean... WTF???... The buyer was trying hard, but... really??!!!...

Ya I purchased a m&p40 and got that same BS and got treated like I was a 2 year old almost left but it was when m&p's were in short supply.

I sold a XDM45 to a guy and the chick had him read the book and he kinda blew it off. Then came the question about a squib and he said wtf is a squib lol? I helped him with that one and the chick didn't seem to mind.

I asked her what was the deal with all the questions and they said since they sell so many guns, they get scrutinized heavily by the CA DOJ so they go above and beyond. It didn't seem to make sense but I stopped trying to think that this state makes sense.

Targetmasters would be the last place I'd go to for any sort of gun advice.

The only reason I go there is that it's close, and even then, I still prefer Reeds.

As far as I know TM is one of the top selling FFLs in Nor Cal, maybe in the whole state. I'm sure they have to be very careful to avoid any problems with Big Bro. Just play along. I've bought a couple of handguns from them and I don't mind the song and dance. I do mind that the state requires it but thats another story.

Who said anything about going there for advice?

Yes, I have bought from TM's before and they do question you, but they do have a great selection and pretty decent prices on firearms.

It is hard to beat TMs prices on firearms unless you buds guns it. It is annoying when you have to answer all their questions.

TM is a trade off IMHO. Their selection is not what it used to be years ago, but it's still quite...decent. For the money you save (their prices are usually the lowest around for new and not bad for used, depending on the gun) you "'pay" for it in time and paperwork. If you are the customer currently being helped, you're lucky...so enjoy your ~45 minutes of process (I've refinanced my house in shorter time with less paperwork that either a PPT or new purchase at TM). If you're NOT the customer currently being helped, multiply 45 minutes by every customer in front of you and then ask yourself if the savings is worth it.

As for the range...that's another issue. Only during a week day and that's after looking over the current shooters. You're taking your life in your hands, literally, when using their range, especially at night or on the weekends. Money talks on their range (business is business) and safety is not a priority. When you consider the size of their shooting lanes, the density and number of shooters per lane saying it's tight is an understatement. Add the self-policing safety that is in practice and you have a recipe for disaster. Too many other, less dangerous places to shoot. TM caters to a specific audience with their extended range hours and my safety is not worth participating in their business model.

Been to Target Masters once during the week around 1 or 2 o'clock, so there weren't too many people on the range. I rented a SA 1911 (which I fell in love with).

While it was fun, their range is very cramped. Not a lot of room on the stand in front or behind. You're practically on top of the person in front if you're sharing a lane. Add in a backpack or range bag or two and you're REALLY cramped.

Reeds has more room on each lane and behind. I will probably go to Reeds next time I hit the range.

Q: How do prices compare between Target Masters and Reeds?

                      Thanks!!!

Why do they ask those questions during a PPT??

I picked up an m&p9 a couple months back and spent over an hour there answering their malfunction/safety questions and filling out paperwork.. They even make copies of your bills if you pay cash.. At other LGS's it takes me no more than 15-30 minutes to get it all done
