    Inaccurate M&P9 :(

So I had my M&P9 since May and as of yesterday shot about 1000 rounds. last month at Metcalf Shooting Range, (yes I'm doing a shameless plug) and noticed I was shooting down and left from 15 yards. So yesterday, again at Metcalf, my friend who was a former SWAT and current firearms instructor shoot my gun and with a 2 inch grouping at 15 yards aiming center mass, his rounds were pulling left and down, about 6 inches from center mass.

so long story short, could my sights be bad? bad barrel?

i have cleaned it after every time i go shoot and is kept lubed. will smith & wesson fix this or replace the sights?

I am 99.999% sure it is all you.

Look for the best shooter on the line and ask him or her to run 5 careful rounds through it.

The trigger on your pistol is not easy to master so having a SWAT officer shoot it off target is not uncommon.

You will find it is most likely right on.

Not sure where Metcalf is but if you want to meet up at USI I can get you on target in one afternoon.

Forgot to mention my SWAT buddy has a M&P40 and had the same stock trigger until he changed it to the APEX trigger. He shot it on a solid platform and shot a tighter grouping than me but in the same area, down and left.

and Metcalf is in San Jose, right before Morgan Hill

I have a M&P 40 Compact and I would have sworn my sights were off. Took about 3k rounds to get rid of the down/left. Still rears it's ugly head from time to time but concentrating on my trigger pull fixes it.

The amount of recoil a given gun produces divided by the square root of the shooters experience directly correlates the number of "it shoots low left" comments we get.

While it is "possible" that the sights are off a bit, I would give it 95% + that the pistol is fine. I have been shooting M&P's for 4 years, and when I shoot my 1911 and go back to an M&P, it takes me a few shots to re-learn the trigger. My shots? Down and to the left.

I would shoot your gun off a rest or a sandbag to see how the gun patterns. It is a known problem with some M&P9s for them to exhibit poor accuracy.

After I put about 1,000 rounds through my M&P9 Pro, my front sight ended up visibly drifted over to the right. You could just look at the top of the slide and see it wasn't centered up. Shooter aside, if you're consistently off by 6 inches when aiming at 15 yards...I might stick my neck out and say that you should be able to see if your sights are off. It's pretty easy to check with fixed sights - is there equal spacing on both the left and right side of the front and rear sight?

I would offer up shooting a magazine through it over at Reeds if you're interested. We can even swap my 5" barrel into your gun and rule that out as well, heh

I have an m&p9 too. Sights have been right on for me. You can try it out at reeds if you'd like. Check if the sights are visibly lined up. If so, it is more than likely you. The trigger on an m&p9 is weird and takes getting used to.

I tried my M&P9 out last weekend and I was shooting down and to the left. So was my friend. We are both very inexperienced pistol shooters and when we handed it off to someone at the range to try it out he was shooting it dead nuts on. So its probably just you. And I second the person who said that its the trigger pull. We rented a 1911 and I was shooting dead nuts on with that (which I attribute to the better trigger). I have an apex kit in there but its still a long trigger pull. I'm going to be doing some dry fire drills for sure, only way to get better!

It is possible the gun shoots a little down and left, that is one of the reasons almost all competition shooters have adjustable sights. To make the gun shoot where you look. If you are shooting two inch groups at 10 -15 yds. Your shooting good. The gun is sighted for the average male. If you are taller or shorter, if your eyes are closer together or if your arms are longer or shorter than the average male the gun will shoot differently.

Both my M&P 9 & 9c are very accurate. I dont shoot my M&P 45 as well, but it is me, not the gun.

The range I go to has a chest size gong at about 75 yards that I can hit 17 times with a 17 round mag with either gun.

Down and left is common for new M&P shooters with new triggers. The used .40 I picked up was easier to shoot than the new .45 as the trigger was broken in. Apex upgrades helped me get on target with my .45.

Also note the stock sights are designed to hit what's covered by the front sight DOT. If you are trying to use the sights traditionally, you'll hit low.

When I picked up my M&P, I went straight from the store to the range and put about 200 rounds through it. I found myself grouping well, but hitting low left.

Then I took it home and dry fired it a bunch. Turns out it was all me. I found that I had to put a lot more finger on the trigger and pull at a slightly different angle than I was used to in order to not pull the sights low and left when the trigger broke.

Dry fire it a bunch and experiment with finger placement. It took a little doing for me to get used to the trigger, but I shoot it just fine now.
