Good or bad info. from a gun store

I was in a gun store today and was asking the guy behind the counter about doing an 80% into a pistol. I think I was given bad info. about the build and would like other opinions.

My understanding is that to do the build, I need to do the 80% myself. Assemble the pistol into a sse configuration. Then do the bullet button and 10 round mag. I also do not need to register it (up to me).

What I was told by the counter guy, was that after it was assembled, I would need to register the pistol with DOJ. That only rifles from a 80% build were excempt from being registered and that "PISTOL" would also have to be on the lower. I told I thought he was mistaken and told me that most people did not know this.

Am I wrong or is the counter guy mistaken?

You are correct. You also don't have to mark the lower in anyway (unless you want to, or decide to sell it in the future.)

never believe what you are told in a shop when asking legal advice... some of it MIGHT be correct but its not worth taking your chances in some situations.

You need the BB in before the SSE it needs to be FIXED 0 ROUND MAG I might be mistaken but thats how I understand it.

          This thread is worthless...

26 How do I know if my firearms need to be registered?

There is no firearm registration requirement in California
except for assault weapon owners and personal handgun
importers. However, you may submit a Firearm Ownership Record
to the DOJ for any firearm you own. Having a Firearm Ownership
Record on file with the DOJ may help in the return of your
firearm if it is lost or stolen. With very few and specific
exceptions, all firearm transactions must be conducted through a
            firearms dealer.

            The key word is "importers"

Good idea to do this just in case.

If it gets stolen, lost or whatever, easier to report it if it has some sort of identification number.

              But it is NOT required.

Last year an employee at TDS told me something different. He also showed me an 80% pistol that supposedly is the shop owner's pistol. I distinctly remember that I was told that no registration was needed. That employee is no longer with TDS, but not because he gave out bad info. So yes, don't always believe what the guy/gal behind the counter is telling you.

You are correct Sir. Without a magazine lock; like the Bullet Button, you have just built a Semi-Auto Pistol with a Magazine well outside of the pistol grip. That is an Assault Weapon and very bad in CA.

Building a AR style pistol from an 80% should be done in this order:
                      1. Complete the lower by doing all the remaining work
                      2. Install your LPK with a magazine lock of some king; like the Bullet Button
                      3. Install pistol grip and buffer tube
                      4. Insert a zero round magazine into the magwell
                      5. Attach your less than 16" barreled upper to your lower

Buy doing it this way you have just built a SSE pistol. If you do everything as listed above but skip step 4 you have just built an un-rostered un-safe semi-auto handgun in CA and have broken the law.

Once you have built a SSE pistol you may now use a tool to remove the zero round magazine and replace it with 10 round magazine and no laws have been broken along the way to your new AR style pistol.
                      Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

                        Oldmotor,

I could have answered your thread based solely on your title. The last time someone got 100% correct info over a gun store counter was well over a dozen years ago...

Kidding aside; you've got the order wrong in your 80% sequence.
