Both are fine pistols and will serve you well for many years.
Grips: SR=skinny, XD=fat
Country of manufacture: SR=USA, XD=Croatia
If it was my money? M&P .40
Just sayin.....

+1 for Ruger. American made reliability. Thousands of rounds through my SR9c and only 1 jam to this day. (Shooters error)Comment

If it was my choice having owned both, I would go with the SR-40. It shoots better in my hands. Lower bore axis, very good ergos, trigger job costs less and personally, I like the grip better.
There isn't too much in the way of aftermarket stuff for the SR-40 but Galloway has you covered for almost anything you would want. As far as sights, unless Ameriglo has fixed their math, they don't work too well. Point of impact is way way low to the point of aim. Novaks might be a better option. Or XS big dots if that's your cup of tea.
In the end, they are both good guns.Comment

One thing i look for in a pistol is how it feels in hand.
In terms of grip, the XD is definitely not fat! The glock 17/19 is thicker IMO. The Taurus 24/7pro 9/40's grip is very skinny/thin imo, like the ruger SR9.
I dont mean to thread crap, just sharing my experiences with similar pistols!

I've got an SR9, and shoot a friends XD 9 frequently.... not the same as the 40's, but very similar mechanics.
For me, I occasionally have problems getting the grip safety of the XD to engage. Maybe it's the size/shape of my hands, but for whatever reason, every couple of mags I'd get one shot that wouldn't go because of the grip safety. That's a huge problem for me in terms of self defense... I can pretty much guarantee if I ever need to shoot an attacker in my home, I'm not going to be using a form-perfect grip.
On the bright side, it really highlighted for me whenever I was starting to anticipate the shot!
The SR just fits my hand much more comfortably. Call me old-school, but I also prefer a manual safety.
Rent them, shoot them, see what fits *your* hand.===============

Gotta love calguns and all the I know better than the choices you presented that come up in threads like this.
FWIW, when I had my XD9 I absolutely loved it. I had absolutely zero problems with it, it was extremely accurate and I found it to be very comfortable to shoot. I've handled a few Ruger SRs in the gun store but never actually shot one, so I have no real opinion other than Ruger has a great reputation, I've never talked to someone that owns one that disliked it. One thing to keep in mind is that there is no "warranty" with a Ruger, whereas Springfield has a lifetime warranty on the XD series pistols. I know that Ruger does provide excellent customer service, but I would much rather have a written guarantee that IF something does break I'm not shelling out my own cash to have it fixed, and that does get considered when purchasing a gun. Not taking my personal experience into account I would lean toward the XD for that simple reason, though I really doubt you could go wrong either way.Any man who afflicts the human race with ideas must be prepared to see them misunderstood. - H.L Mencken

I have the XD9 and like the ergonomics, but I prefer the short trigger reset of my Glock 19.... and NO, I'm not going to tell you to go Glock
Get the pistol that works best for you! A couple of points to consider in that respect: What is going to be your main use for the pistol? If this will be your ONE gun, make sure that:
- it fits your hand
- it points well for you (does it align well with the target or does something feel awkward)
- you can operate it well (load/reload/rack)
- you can shoot it well (sights, recoil management, trigger press, trigger reset)
These should be your main points - rent both guns and test them side-by-side.
Check out the secondary cost for your equipment or if you can get it at all. What is the cost and availability of the following items:
- Magazines
- holsters
- mag carriers
- tactical light with remote switch
- spare parts such as springs, extractor, firing pin
Figure those points out and you have your answer!Upcoming Classes:

These were my first 2 choices when looking for a 40 too. Have an sr9 already loved how thin it is, easy for my wife to shoot, but after shooting the xd, I wasnt the biggest fan, then came across the sp2022, fell in love with the trigger and grip (Only downside w/ the sp2022 is i wish the grip was a little longer). Personally 1-sp2022, 2-sr40, 3-xd.22, 9, 40, 45, .223, .308, .300, 12g
[QUOTE I have it because I want to shoot it at 100 yards. At paper. From a bench. Who cares? I don't have to defend it... except to my wife.QUOTE]Comment
