Same here. I keep it in my night stand with a security cable running through the back and bolted to the wall. Not fool proof, but it keeps little hands out while still giving me quick access, which was my #1 priority.

To keep thieves out - well slowed down a while- you will want a heavier, thicker and more expensive model. I beleive that liberty makes better quality bedside models than most...

According to this page which has the equation for deflection and this PDF which has the moment of inertia constants for various rectangular cross sections of steel tubing at various gauges, the answer is yes it can handle that load and here is the proof.

We know from this safes product page that it is 14ga steel with dimensions 6x52x14 (H x W x D). Unfortunately, that PDF only goes up to 2"x4" for rectangular tubing, but if we calculate that a 2x52x4 safe can handle that 600lb load then surely a 6x52x14 safe can handle it.

Using the equation given to find deflection D = P x l^3 / 48EI and plugging in the numbers we get the following answer:

D = (600*(52^3))/(48*30000000*2.0533) = 0.029"

So for a 2x52x4 rectangular safe made of 14ga steel, a 600lb load would deflect it just shy of 1/32 of an inch. A 6x54x14 will deflect much, much less.

Those numbers make my brain hurt. Lol but thank you for the answer.

Thanks for this post and comments. I've been considering using one of those "touch lock" safes.

Question: Are they truly functional? In a crisis, do you guys believe they will allow you to open the safe, no questions asked?

I would love have my EDC by my bed, but I really want to "safe" it, no pun intended.

I'm more worried about someone breaking in when im not home and stealing the whole thing than it not opening when I need it to. Plus, there's a back up key in case batteries die.

After comparing the FAS1, Titan, and GunVault, I chose the FAS1. It requires no batteries and is extremely well built, with thick steel. Another one I wanted to check out was the Fort Knox safe mentioned by Sir Grumps, but I don't personally know anyone that has one.

I had a friend who had the electronic gun vault he bought for like $50. He went to open it one day and it wouldn't work. It acted like the batteries were dead. He put a 9 volt in the back emergency port that allows you to open it with a dead battery still wouldn't open. He pulled out his pocket knife and popped the lid right open with little effort.

Had it been an emergency he wouldn't be able to get his gun out and if it was a thief they would have had the gun in 5 seconds. After that we all went out and bought Titan gun vault's. It's riveted to my bed frame made of steel and has a mechanical combination lock.

easy access safe, would be in your waistband or your pocket. Honestly, with the above safes mentioned/ suggested please do not count and rely on them for security while in your home or vehicle.

The gunvault has continued to serve me well. It securely mounts to almost anything has a very long battery life, and very quick access.
