    Easy access handgun safe...

Im looking for a decent "quick access" hangun safe. Even if its only a single handgun capacity mainly to keep close to the bed for HD.
What do you guys have and use and pictures would be great too.

Love my Gunvault. My brother has the SpeedVault and likes it. Both can be opened without needing lights to look at it. Takes me about 1 second to open it and have my gun in my hand.

Bug Splat- does it mount securely to a nightstand or bed rail? That looks like a good option

Homak bolted inside of a nightstand drawer. Electronic, no keys required.

FWIW, I was digging the idea of the fingerprint sensor safes, as they seem quicker and are definitely cooler than having to push a pattern of buttons, until I read last month's Shooting Illustrated and then checked out some reviews online. Turns out you have to be pretty darn consistent in how you run your finger over the sensor, and even with a lot of practice and programming it in a few different ways (some of them can store 20+ fingerprints that all have access), most people only get it to activate on the first try like 50% to 75% of the time. I'd hate to try it under duress, and by the third time I put my finger on it and it didn't work, I'm probably ripping it off the wall to club the intruder on the head.

So... the ones that Bug Splat posted are also available with fingerprint sensors but, just like he pictured, I'd get the ones with buttons.... my $0.02

I have the Winchester evault 600 I bought at bass pro for $130. Not happy with it at all. Under a stressful situation, pressing in the code quickly will not make it open. You almost have to wait 1 second between each number, thats a test of patience if someone is running at you....

I'd try the gun vault to see how it actually works when pressing in the code quickly.

I bought the Amsec DV652 for $550 shipped and I'm really happy with it. It's an under-the-bed safe with a 6 digit code (8 keys total for clear and pound) that you can type in relatively fast. This safe is approved by the CA DOJ. The best thing I like about it is that it holds my tactical 870 12ga with ease. If you're really serious about HD, there is no better weapon to get than a 12ga, especially considering you can get them under $400.

Here is a video of the safe. Note that the "mounting holes" on the top are not infact mounting holes, they are just holes so you can get a screwdriver in to mount the bolts through the bottom mounting holes:

^^^ how tough is that thing? I mean hypathetically speaking if the bed were to break for any reason would it be able to take a 300 pound bed pluse 300+ pounds of people dropping on it. Some lock boxes don't seem very sturdy.

yup, has holes to bolt it to anything you want. I have mine bolted to the top of my dresser not with wood screws but with heavy bolts and washers increasing the surface area that its gripping. Its not going anywhere.

Premium U.S.-built Titan pistol vaults with mechanical quick-access locks, DOJ-approved steel safes for home, car, or office. Portable and mountable.

They cost more but there worth the money. They are more secure than the electronic gun safes and work every time.

According to this page which has the equation for deflection and this PDF which has the moment of inertia constants for various rectangular cross sections of steel tubing at various gauges, the answer is yes it can handle that load and here is the proof.

We know from this safes product page that it is 14ga steel with dimensions 6x52x14 (H x W x D). Unfortunately, that PDF only goes up to 2"x4" for rectangular tubing, but if we calculate that a 2x52x4 safe can handle that 600lb load then surely a 6x52x14 safe can handle it.

Using the equation given to find deflection D = P x l^3 / 48EI and plugging in the numbers we get the following answer:

                            D = (600*(52^3))/(48*30000000*2.0533) = 0.029"

So for a 2x52x4 rectangular safe made of 14ga steel, a 600lb load would deflect it just shy of 1/32 of an inch. A 6x54x14 will deflect much, much less.

I use the Nanovault 300. It carries my Glock 19 + 2 magazines and I can set it so that all I need to do is turn one dial to unlock it. It's also good for LUCC in the car and has a cable so I can secure the container to the bed or vehicle. They're also pretty cheap- I picked mine up for $30 about a year ago.
