            Whatever comes up in the future, never never sell that gun. I see it happen alot and 90% of the time it's followed with regret shortly after.

                This is a priceless gift. The amount any collector will pay does not compare to the sentimental value for you and your family.
                Find an experienced Colt Gunsmith (very few gunsmiths are experts on your Colt) to look it over, before you even think about firing it. He can measure the firing pin for you.
                Do this ASAP, while you can still find a Colt expert. They are getting rarer by the day.
                Once you are certain that all is good, take it to the range and fire some mild loads through it. No reason to abuse this gun at this age, make it last forever.

                      Very nice! If there was ever a reason for a gun to be a safe queen, that's it.

                      Love how the checkering is worn off the grip, adds to the character of it.

                      As others have said have it checked out for mechanical soundness and never, ever sell it. That's a part of your family history there.
