Have you tried looking in the area of the frame right where the extraction rod fits into, just in front of the cylinder? It might be hidden there.

    Nm, beaten to it.

It wasn't issued to him....that Python was always his personally owned gun

CHP officers had to buy their own duty guns until the late 70s, when the officer's union forced the state to issue guns to the officers. The first gun issued to CHP officers was the S&W M68. It was a stainless, 6" K-frame chambered, and marked, .38 Special...in essence a 6" M66 chambered in .38. Their issue ammo was the Winchester Treasury Load, 110gr +P+ JHP

Many officers sold their duty weapons when the state started issuing them...I bought a CHP officer's old Python when I joined the local SD

Looks like it's on the frame under where the cylinder meets the frame.

Serial is 2xx. Looks like it's from 1955. The journey continues...

I was told the firing pin was removed (it's clearly not). Anyone know how far it's supposed to protrude past the frame when fired?

Confirming you own a 3 digit Python?

I don't think S&W is going to be much help with the history of his Colt

I just realized that . . . don't know if Colt offers a similar service.

I think Colt will research and provide a letter at a nominal fee

The letter takes at least 4 months and costs $100. Pete

It costs $75 for a Python. I ordered one for my 1961 Python around 4 months ago and it hasn't arrived yet

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

Although he didn't join the CHP until 1956, I'm wondering if he bought it while he was in the academy???

As you should! What a cool inheritance. I know you'll cherish that wheel gun forever.
