He is just trying to purchase the best model he can afford in his price range.
I would hate to see him spend the money and find out the gun not reliable.

If that's the case, he can get a NIB, Made in America, Kimber TLE and he'll never have to look back.

OP tell your friend to buy whatever feels best for him & not to worry about what everyone else says the best one it (hint: it's the one they own)
any modern firearm from a reputable manufacture should work flawlessly out of the box & if it doesn't then the manufactures will make it right... remember there name is on it.
if he really want to get in to what is better or perceived as better tell him to start looking at the differences in 70 vs 80 series or the different safeties that the different manufactures use, or at the different warranties offered (did that say one year)

they are all different but in the end they are all 1911s, just find something he likes and be happy with it

oh and my personal preference is with the Springfield

I dealt with Kimber's warranty service and they are crappy. Doesn't want to stand by their product. They lost a customer for life. Btw, warranty is like insurance. You want to have a good one when you need to use it.

I've heard of that too, but from what I understood, it was largely dependent on the type of failure, breakage, malfunction or warranty issue.

I have had absolutely excellent cust. service from kimber - they replaced my French walnut rifle stock, gratis, only because I contacted them to remark that I thought it ought to have more striping in it (considering the rifle's quality - which is superb, by the way). That's customer service.

The Springfield Loaded parkerized is probably the best value for the money in that price range. It's a series 70 style, full of modern features, Novak style night sights, and lifetime warranty.

This is an excellent choice for his price range, even with tax and possibly transfer rate he will still come in under $1000. Leaves him a little cash for ammo and extras such as magazines.

I would tell him to bump up to the next price range: $1200-$1500. You'll be able to find a nice used semi-custom in that range or something of similar quality. Honestly, if he's going to be shooting for any extended amount of time the cost of ammunition will dwarf the initial cost of the gun.

Or keep the weapon budget at $1000 and use that potentiality boosted budget to pay for ammo.
