Picked up my CZ SP01, ongoing range reports

Picked up my CZ SP01 after it sat at Guns Direct for a grueling 37 days. Took her home and cleaned her. Applied frog lube and let it cure for an hour and then I went straight to the range.

Put 200 rounds of 115 grain speer lawman fmj down range in an hour's time. Zero malfunctions under any circumstances. There's a pic of the first 50 shots at 10 yards. Not my best but I was pleased at how accurate it was when I did my part.

The single action is really really sweet. It's lighter and more crisp than the rental 75b at the range, by A LOT. I am really impressed by it. The double action is long and heavy. I shot maybe 2 mags as double action, and the rest single action.

It is ACCURATE. I was too excited and in the moment to take more pictures. I should have.

The control placement is excellent. So far it's the only gun I can hit the mag release without altering my grip. The slide stop is placed so that I can easily actuate it, but it's nowhere near my thumbs when I'm gripping the pistol as to cause an accidental bump. The safety doesn't get in the way of my grip either. The control placement is excellent for a thumbs forward grip.

The higher upswept beaver tail is much more comfortable than the one on the 75b, which bit into the web between my thumb and pointer finger. Didn't have that problem with the SP01.

The recoil was so minimal. The least recoil in any 9mm ive shot so far. Te sights just land right back on target, it's feaky. The night sights are nice.

I could not be more happy with my purchase. And now a gun whore confession: I bought a satin nickel CZ 75b AND a 75b stainless on grabagun.com .. It was by accident. I am going to sell the satin nickel most likely.

Nice Report Daybreak.... I want one so bad now =)

How would you compare it to your previous RIA 1911 9mm?

I like that it's heavier. The single action trigger is much nicer in my SP01, oddly. I'd say they are about the same in accuracy. The finish is much nicer. I prefer the SP01s larger grip. I prefer the control placement. If I had to pick between the two it'd be the SP01 by a long shot. However if I had to pick a second steel 9mm handgun, it would absolutely be a 9mm 1911. Either the RIA tactical I had (but refinished in NP3 or cerakote) or a springfield 9mm 1911.

Thank you for the report. My new SP-01 is sitting in the safe, I am going to be gone so I can't shoot it yet. Torture!

Let me know if you're interested in selling the polished stainless.

Don't cheat your self by only shooting in sa. Get some lightened springs and practice.

its a matte stainless, and unfortunately I am positive I am keeping it!

@zfields I will definitely dedicate more practice to DA. For now I'm snap capping away in DA. What spring combo do you recommend? I will not be using a kadet kit with the SP01.

I'd go with a 13lbs mainspring, along with the FPB, and FP spring.

I'd also do a lighter recoil spring (I run a 14 lb in mine). The factory one is extremely stiff for easily handling NATO and S&B and +P+ type loads. If you shoot mostly standard power ammo, you can drop down on the recoil spring stiffness by a whole lot and still be very much in the safe zone mechanically (not approaching slide/frame battering). It makes racking the slide significantly easier and changes the recoil impulse a bit. The mainspring also makes racking the slide easier if the hammer is down (it makes cocking the hammer easier, which means it also lightens up the DA pull in a big way).

If you shoot Russian / steel-cased ammo, I might suggest not going as soft as a 13 lb mainspring, as this ammo tends to have hard primers and you will run into occasional issues with light strikes. I dropped down to a 15 lb mainspring and still felt a massive difference compared to the OEM spring, but never worry about light strikes with any ammo (and it works with the Kadet upper). If you shoot decent brass ammo then I don't think you'd have a problem. Then again, if you have it for self defense purposes you don't want to tune it right to the edge.

If I keep reading these threads, I may have to add an SP-01 to my family.

And you should. TDS guns in bonita has one in stock, but there asking 699.

Glad you like it Daybreak, good shooting too btw. I just picked mine up today, and havent had a chance to break her down to give a good cleaning. Ill get my report up once I get a chance.

Thanks for the tips guys. I am kind of superstitious when it comes to modifying my guns. I have it ingrained in my head that stock = reliable, so I'm a little gun shy even doing something simple like experimenting with different spring weights.

I plan to keep either the SP01 stock or the 75b stainless stock, and I'll probably mod and tune the other.
