Each person needs to decide what is best for his/her situation. If you are one of those who is stupid enough not to follow proper fireams handling rules and are plannng to grab a firearm while in a reduced state of mind, I'd go further than no round in the chamber. I'd suggest pepper spray and leaving your firearms in a locked safe. If you trust your life to a mechanical safety, I guess you've already decided what your life is worth. If you believe that the ONLY safety that counts is an empty chamber/empty mag well with an open action, then you also believe that you ALWAYS treat EVERY firearm as if it is completely loaded and ready to fire. For me, the last option is the only one that a safe gun handler follows. Now, if a safe gun handler decides to keep his/her SD firearm in any condition, he or she will ALWAYS handle it safely and will know know what to do if it is ever needed. There is no universally correct answer for every shooter in every situation. But, for the OP to think that one needs to be a ninja to not rely on external safeties goes to show his lack of knowledge and experience on the subject. ALL mechanical safeties can and have failed! I would NEVER risk my life or the lives of my family by 100% trusting any mechanical safety.

A foreign object in the trigger well sounds like a recipe for an ND.
If a holster won't fit in your gun vault, perhaps you'd find more comfort in keeping your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot? I happen to have a light on my HD pistol, so my index finger is first going to manipulate the switch before finding its way to the trigger.

Or you can keep a glass of water on your night stand to dump on your face if you need to wake up and use your gun

I have an LEM trigger on my P2000 and I keep still keep it in condition 3 for HD since I too have small children around. It's in the safe during the day and at night it goes on a top shelf in my closet so I can grab it without fumbling with a combo. I have also conditioned myself to never ever leave the gun on a counter or my desk when the kids aren't around. This way, I will never accidentally do it while they are around..

That's what I keep on my Glock that's being used for HD. Even after mine cracked, it is still useful as a trigger guard cover and I can pop it on as a makeshift holster if I need to.

Rigma, invest in a Gun Vault, a Titan Gun Vault or other similar device. If I'm awake enough to enter my combination on my Gun Vault I'm awake enough NOT to put my finger into the trigger guard until I'm ready to shoot.

Well imagine this situation, you are woken up by the door splitting open and you grab your pistol but for 3 hours youv been sleeping on your arm so it's dead asleep and you can't rack the slide in the heat of the second because for some silly reason you don't keep a loaded gun for home defense. My solution- simply keep your booger-hook off the trigger unless your sights are on something you want to shoot.

First off, thank you all for not simply stating my idea was stupid, (which it was) and instead giving constructive criticism and analysis to set me straight.

Thank you for pointing out the Saf-T-Blok, it seems someone has already come up with a better design.

Thanks also to those that pointed out that another mechanical device is not the answer. The tool is not the problem, I am the problem. If I have an issue with the tool or how it is staged for use, then I simply need a new tool or different setup/strategy.

When I decided my home needed to be secure, I didn't try to invent some new security device. I bought an alarm system and a big dog that thankfully has protective instincts with regards to my wife and our property line.

I am currently looking into a new handgun (because who needs an excuse to buy another and I still don't have one in .40) and the model(s) of interest are SA/DA. I still need to rent or test out at a range with someone that owns the current top of my list to ensure a good match.

Thanks again for teaching someone who is humble and eager enough to learn. It is why I love Calguns...and my wife is right, I need to get more sleep.
