I own a STI Guardian that is my absolute favorite gun! Honestly, I would always think to myself, "why don't people want a 1911 in 9mm?"

I actually wish I had a RIA GI in 9mm that I can shoot every range trip and not feel guilty about it!

Anyone know of any good options that are Cal legal in 9mm?

Springfield Stainless Loaded full size 9mm

I feel the need to add my 2 cents regarding Springfields 9mm. Bought new 5-6 years ago and have >6000 rounds down the barrel. I did have one issue where the slide stop cracked. I called Springfield... They paid to have the gun shipped and fixed it for me, while there I had the custom shop work it over, they added a couple things for my trouble. Top rate service. I run all kinds of rounds including reloads with no problem. I tried some 10 round magazines and had feeding issues occasionally. I have not had any problems with the Springfield magazines (9 round). The gun is the first one going in my range bag and the last one going in at the range.
I have several 9mm pistols including a Sig X-Five Competition, the Sig is the most accurate but the 1911 fits me the best. Depending on the day I am about even with them in shooting performance.

I have several Springfield 1911's along with my loaded 9mm - the few times I have had problems with them, Springfield has been very generous in resolving them. I have full confidence in their products and know from firsthand experience that they stand behind their products.

Here are the current FS 1911 9mm models on the CA Roster. With SSE any model is avilable but for non-exempt and non-sse these are the 9mm choices.

I've been hearing lots of jamming issues with the Springfields. Not just the 9mm, but the .45s too. Sure Springfield will fix it for free, but this is unacceptable for a 1k gun. Kimbers also seem to be somewhat hit and miss. I would look strongly at STI since it's built specifically for 9mm, but their off roster, so you'll have to find used.

No good reason NOT to buy one of these, both are fine pistols. For me, they just don't inspire the same emotion as a 1911. That being said, I've owned several and still have a Glock. I can't remember 1 ftf in any of them; completely reliable and pretty accurate firearm.

1911s in 9mm, as you can see from this thread, can be somewhat finicky. For defense or duty, I don't know of any SME that recommends a 1911 in anything other than .45. Some people take that advice, some don't. So, it depends on you. Hilton Yam uses an M&P with TS when he switches to 9mm. LAV uses a Glock. I wouldn't chance using any gun for defense or duty without running at least 500 trouble free rounds through it. And yes, the so called break in period rounds count.

For range purposes; if you don't mind doing whatever tuning needs to be done, I don't see why not.
