I'm getting a couple dollars back from my tax return and was looking to upgrade my M&P. I wanted to get some opinions from my fellow CGers. I'm looking to make upgrades one at a time as my other hobbies need money as well haha

I think the best thing you can do is to get training. To me, a gun is as only as good as it shoots- meaning that it's only as good as its user. The mag pouches and holster are necessary equipment in most training courses.
That being said, I had an M&P 9 and put a DCAEK on it. Made a huge difference and allowed me to get good shots off without worrying I was jerking the trigger. Probably just a mental thing, but you never know.Comment

The idea of upgrading a factory trigger on a defensive handgun where so much could go wrong is just wrong. It feels way too much like jumping off a building without a paracute or zip line. I can see it on a target gun or competition rig. Not on a defensive handgun. So I guess my point is it all depends on what you are going to use it for.
I know a thousand people are going to post that they did it, and love it. Still has me shaking my head...no, no no! Goes against everything I've ever been taught...and I've been taught by some very smart people.Comment

Any particular reason you are against the APEX kit? I know its nothing to be overly impressed with, but two different law enforcement agencies have approved use of the DCAEK. I've heard some voice disappointment over the fact that it is a drop-in kit versus something that is gunsmith worked. The idea of upgrading a factory trigger on a defensive handgun where so much could go wrong is just wrong. +1 why not upgrade? I know its a defense gun but if the trigger is sketchy and you shoot poor with it, I do not see how an upgrade would hinder that.
I got one with a competition kit installed, I purchased it used. I plan on changing the springs because I do not do competition, but let me tell you that 2.5 trigger on it feels pretty amazing. Its just not safe for defense that is why I am changing.Comment

It's called Duty/carry Action Enhancement Kit for a reason. I guess some people just hold very hard to the idea that a defensive gun should have no mdifications. I put th DCAEK in mine before I even got it.
Sights can be pricy. If you have some money to spend, might as well do it now.

Just an FYI, Apex's DCAEK and Ram are approved by over a dozen departments nationwide which is rare for an aftermarket trigger. You may have been taught by smart people, but things evolve and ideology's change.
This is the first department and one of the only that publicly say they approve it:

I believe (you know what opinions are worth) that as long as a trigger modification is reliable and safe then they should be welcomed if they allow a shooter to more accurately and more quickly shoot. The idea of upgrading a factory trigger on a defensive handgun where so much could go wrong is just wrong. I've put approximately 6K rounds through my Apex equipped guns so far and they remain reliable.Last edited by Sam; 04-17-2012, 2:55 PM.Comment

Try it yourself before deciding, now with the FSS or the combo of the DCAEK or CAEK, RAM and the new AEK trigger you can have 90% of what you can get from a gunsmith... and another 5% with polishing. My opinions are my own and do not represent the position of other companies I may be involved with.Comment

I don't have anything against the kit per say, just the idea of it being so necessary that is so generally accepted. It this were another model gun, the idea would be completely objectionable. Name another gun that just about everybody says the first thing you should do is upgrade trigger? Just strikes me as damn odd. Most guns the exact opposite is true. Most guns, you are warned that changing the trigger on a duty weapon is along the lines of kissing your sister. Messing with the proven out of the box reliablity is an unforgivable sin.
Perhaps it is that the M&P itself is relatively new and people are not married to the idea that is perfect right out the box. You are not spitting in the face of years of proven success by modifiying it, since the gun itself is still proving itself. Don't get me wrong, I think the M&P is doing fine on that front. But it has a few more years of proven sucess before it rivals some of its competitor's proven field experience. That is something that can only be accomplished with time...and is not a dig on the M&P....thus far it has a great rep. But moding it is not the same sin that is to mod, say...you guessed it...a Glock...or Sig. No expert would advise changing the triggers on those guns if they were a duty weapon. None that I have ever met.
So for me it is just a wierd and difficult concept to accept that an aftermarket trigger is considered ideal on a duty gun. It's not natural.Last edited by tacticalcity; 04-17-2012, 5:14 PM.Comment

^ This and removing the factory magazine disconnect worked wonders!!!! 2000+ rounds later and it has never jammed/misfired/etc... M&P's are tanks just like all of the 3rd gen S&W pistols.Comment
