    Passed the HSC...

    30 out of 30

Now i'm in the market for a new handgun. Looking for something that is all alloy (no polymer, fiancee doesn't dig black frames).

Looking at the S&W 410s and 910s online. I didn't see any of them at the two dealers I've been too although my local one USED to carry them. Anyone have any info on these pistols or if they're no longer CA approved?

Anyone have any good suggestion for a compact to midsize semi-auto in SS, alloy, or nickel? Looking for a 9mm or maybe a .40, so it can't be a 1911 or anything like that. The thing is too big for fiancee's hands (so she says) and .45 is too big for her (us) to start out on, IMHO.

        Ooohh. Keep them coming!!

Fiancee loves the open slides of the Berettas.

That Sig is nice too, Shane. Anyone know about how much either of those run new?

Don't go just on the looks. Try a firing range and shoot various models to find out which one you like best.

Yea. Ranges. Never been. Not planning on going. I like shooting alone. There is only one range, maybe two within driving range that rent handguns, and I don't plan on visiting anytime in the forseeable future.

I'd rather take what you guys say. I trust your experence and heresay.

I will be going on looks too. It has too have a certain look to justify spending a large sum of money on this (too my fincee.. I'd be happy with a f'n glock or ruger)

If you guys have any pros on cons they'd be much appreciated too.

Whatever I get will be for informal plinking and HD at best. No real bench shooting or anything where I need match-grade accuracy. I'd like something not prone to jams and that won't leave the web of my hand sore.

The Sig's of course depening on what model/caliber/finish can run anywhere from $500 used all the way to $900 used. New they run about $600-700 for the basic model, all the way up too over $1000. GunBroker usually has the best variety and prices on them. And with our local FFL charging $50 out the door for the transfer it would be an excellent value.

They also offer CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) firearms. They explain fully about those on their site.

Sig's website has text stating whether the gun is CA approved or not. This can be seen by going into the details of any particular handgun and scrolling down.

You really should think about going to the range, it would be worth your trip. Handguns all fit each of us differently since we all have different hands. Just like test driving a car, all "paper" comparisons can go right out the window as soon as you sit in the seat.

Here is my own personal example. I absolutely can't stand the Glock 19, but I love my Glock 26, 17 and 34 to death, and it all has to do with the difference in how they fit my hand. I bought the 19 because I loved my G26 and my G34 so much. However, the small difference in the grip made the 19 harder for me to shoot well, and I ended up selling it. It all cost me about $100 to learn that I didn't like the G19, I'd wish I'd asked my friends who all sold me on the 19 to let me shoot theirs first.

The Gun Room in Elk Grove rents firearms if you bring another person with you. Last time I rented one they charged a $20 fee and you are required to purchase their ammo for it (WWB). The ammo was actually reasonably priced. Ended up being around $50 but a wise investment for something you will eventually spend $600+ on.

I haven't seen more positive reviews of S&Ws or Berettas than I've seen negative ones (if at all).

Sig should have a higher probability of being the maker you will buy from.
