If you're out of state, the .22 Exchange package is the most economical way to go...I have several friends who have done this

i have the 226 conversion kit. mine shot EVERYTHING i feed it. i run ONLY bulk ammo and never any issues. no ftf, no fte, no stovetops. it was perfect.

I once bought a 229R "classic" model in 22lr. It came with a coupon for a conversion slide to 357 Sig, 40, or 9mm. The slide came with a mag, nite sights etc. $440 for the classic and $350??? For the slide conversion. I know it was in the low/ mid $300 range. So...790 for both. Is that a good price?

Just FYI

the p226 22LR have the same frame as the standard p226.

There are some ammo issues with the 22LR. With CCI it sounds like it works fine.
Others say break it in and once the slide is smoother, it will shoot bulk 22.
It seems it needs the hotter mag to get the slide to move far enough to allow for proper ejection of the cartridge.

Also these guns do not lock the slide in the back position after the last round. again it sounds like it is because the 22 cartridge cannot get the slide to go all the way back and engage the slide lock. there are after market kits that will make the slide stay in the back position after the last round but it will not be all the way back (if that makes sense)

I think going 22LR --> 9/357/40 saves you about 100-120.00
Going the other way allows you to get p226 goodies like short reset, different grips etc...

I've narrowed down my choices of handgun to the P series Sig, and I see the 229s and 226s are occasionally sold with an additional slide, barrel and mag for the lighter/cheaper caliber. Seems like the best of both worlds...am I missing something? Anyone have experience with Sigs kits? Thanks in advance for your comments.

Because you haven't actually purchased the Sig yet (presumably), I'll weigh in quickly with my experience.

A CZ-75-based gun with the CZ Kadet kit adapter (.22 LR "upper" and magazines) will cost you less than the Sig combo. The .22 kit for the CZ is extremely reliable and accurate. In my experience, it functions better with a broader range of ammo than any .22 LR semi-auto pistol I have used in the past, which includes Sig Mosquito, P22, various Rugers, etc etc, but not the Sig conversion admittedly. Anyway... the point being that I don't think you can beat the quality and reliability of the CZ conversion upper. I also don't think Sig surpasses CZ in the quality, accuracy, reliability, etc of the main firearm either... just surpasses CZ in price... but this isn't really part of the discussion here.
