    longer barrel on .45

My uncle is giving me a 1911, yea greatest uncle ever.

the gun has, what looks like, an extention on the barrel, it has 3 slits on the top of the barrel bushing plug(hope thats a good description), now my questions are ....why, what is it for, is it legal in California ??

I hope my explanation isnt to dumb and you experienced gun owners know what Im talking about because I dont lol, Im still learning about this gun that I dont have own yet.

if you could provide a picture so others can see what Im talking about it would help me and them understand the reason for this added part.

    Thanks

Sounds like it has a compensator attached. If so legal.
I support the NRA, if you are not in, you can't win.

If its on the bushing and slide back with the slide than it should be OK. If its threaded to the barral and its removable to expose the thread then its an AW.

It just vent gas upward to push the gun down to help with followup shots.

1911's compensator are generally held in (replaces) the barrel bushing, WC's example:

The goal (same with ported barrel, more or less) is to have the gas pressure release up, keeping the pistol on target resulting in faster follow up shots.
In short, to reduces muzzle rise.

              Congrats!

drop-in compensator. They reduce some recoil and muzzle jump, but don't work as good as a 'real' barrel mounted comp.

It sounds like you are talking about a compensator attached to the barrel bushing and not the barrel, like this

...the plug is the piece under the bushing that retains the recoil spring

                  like this

The function of the bushing mounted compensator is to separate the buyer from his money and to look cool. It is less evil than even a FLGRs or extended slide lock levers

the gun has a "Property of US Government" stamped on it, is this going to be an issue or is it ok to own guns that have this on them ?

Perfectly fine to own that. It just means the govmt was too lazy to remove their property stamp when they sold it.

Give us a serial number and we will tell you when and who made it.
                            Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.
