suggetions on a 22 conversion for 1911

I own a rock island 1911 and iv been looking at purchasing a conversion to 22 so my wife and I can shoot dirt cheap ammo for fun I don't mind blowing 50 to a 100 bucks on 45 but she want to build confidents in shooting my 1911 and I'm looking to buy in the near future and 22s are always fun to shoot

I have a tactical solutions conversion. Accurate, and reliable, feeds wal mart cheap ammo no problem, highly recommend it. It did brake once, customer service was excellent, new part was at the door in a couple of days.

I have a Kimber. It's a little tight on my Charles Daly Filipino 1911 but runs good on my Chinese Norinco.

One magazine works good, the other has some FTFs that are consistent at the second and eight round I think. It's a plastic magazine and I've been told the feed lips can be tweaked by using a cigarette lighter so I'll have to see if I can get it running 100% too.

I think my standard strength mainspring might be contributing to the problem also (lighter might be better).

Wilson Combat also makes one but is currently out of stock on the full size conversion kits. When I get my 1911 out of jail, I will probably get the Advantage Arms kit. Looks to be the best price with the overall good reviews.

Kimber also has good reviews.

For almost the same price as a conversion you can just get the GSG 1911 .22 and you don't have to bother with having to convert and reconvert.

I made a rather disappointing experience with a Kimber conversion kit (used on a TLE II and a Custom CDP). Plenty of FTE/FTF, even with CCI Blazer and similar ammo.

What bugged me from day one was the craftmanship of the kit - the barrel had a rather rough lathe finish - not even close to the finish that the standard Kimber barrels have. I'm not a trained machinist, but I can turn out a better finish on an old Colchester engine lathe than that .

Bottom line: I the rough finish led probably to increased friction between barrel and slide and consequently had it's part in the malfunctions.

Did I mention that I no longer have any Kimbers?

Another vote for Kimber or Tactical Solutions...or get a GSG

Kimber's is great too. I had one installed on my SA GI .45 for a while and liked the reliability and the fact that you could dryfire it with no damage; it says so right in the user's manual. Function was excellent.

Pros: Great functioning kit (I had no failures of any kind after about 600+ rounds)
Fits most 1911 guns and installation was a snap
Adjustable target sights
Pretty accurate

Cons: Slide does not lock back on an empty chamber
Comes with only 1 magazine
Absolutely no felt recoil, almost like shooting a non reciprocating airsoft gun
Takes your .45 out of service

I finally sold it for 50 bucks less than I paid for it. I decided to go with a dedicated .22 pistol.

My Kimber is nicely machined, no complaints there.

The only machining complaints I have heard are about the thumb safety notch not fitting some frame/safety combinations. As a target practice tool I don't see a big problem with that.

I've heard some negative things about Kimber's .45s but an aluminum slide is pretty hard to screw up and as far as I can tell, Kimber hasn't screwed it up.

i say just get gsg 1911. unless the conversion is that much cheaper, no use getting conversion when a gsg is so cheap and both of you can shoot at once..

I have a Kimber conversion kit for my SA 1911 and works great. I would recommend either the Kimber or get the GSG 1911 instead.

I have a kimber conversion as well. works great but took some fitting to put it on a thompson auto ordnance frame. less recoil that a Ruger 22/45 and about the same accuracy. Unless you are getting one for a really good deal then just buy a dedicated 22lr semi auto. Less hassle equals more time shooting.

Advantage Arms worked perfect on my Glock and it works perfectly on my SA 1911.
