Will it be carried? An L frame will be a bit easier to conceal since the cylinder diameter is smaller. Also the 3" barrel will squeek out a bit more velocity and the weight will help with recoil. You really can't go wrong with either but I would go with the 686+ if for carry. The 327 is definitely a unique piece but the 686 is a bit more practical in my eyes.

For a range gun I would get a 627, no need for the light frame. An 8 shot revolver is unique and N frames are awesome!

Even for a range gun I'd take a pre-lock 686 over anything current production with the shrouded barrel. But that's just me.

S&W 627 snub nose! I love the 686 plus but the 627 has 8 rounds of 357 so to me the 627 is the winner...Here's a video of it...Warning this video will make you want to buy one...

Just got one of these. It is such a niiiiice gun. I really suggest the 627.

On the other hand, the 6 pack 6 shooter looks interesting (not a range gun tho).

If you have STEEL BALLS, then you will get the .500 Magnum.

EDIT: and the Governor reference was posted before I realized the gun won't be made available to us lowly morons who cannot be trusted by our government.

Instead of looking at the model and frame size, start with the material. The basic ones are made of stainless steel. They are durable and heavier. The lighter ones will have scandium alloy frame with the stainless steel cylinder. The lightest will be scandium alloy frame with the titanium alloy cylinder. When it comes to the light ones, be careful what you wish for.

The ones you listed belong to different categories. It's not just 627 vs. 327 vs. 686. For general shooting you really want steel, both for durability and recoil. You can get the other ones later. So, a *steel* 627 or 686 will be your best choice.
