That is just a cut down AR-15 without a gas tube. What makes it a pistol? Because it is smaller?

No. The receiver was sold from the factory as a pistol---it is NOT simply a converted rifle. It has been re-engineered to operate in an obviously abbreviated platform. Notice no buffer tube, and extremely short gas tube. The tube on top, is now the recoil system, with a bolt carrier heavily modified to work totally in inside the receiver confines.

These are loud, fairly accurate, and fun as hell
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself...A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."......Cicero

It's a pistol because BATFE says it is.

        They classify guns as:
        • Rifles
        • Shotguns
        • Revolvers
        • Pistols

(There are some other classiifcations that aren't germane to this discussion)

They have also officially declared a piece of string to be a "machine gun", so they aren't exactly oracles on firearms.

            It counts...

But for the sake of argument - this one predates the DE also, and wasn't originally designed as a rifle.

But you would agree that the pic of the Olympic Arms gun I posted earlier is a "pistol", no?

And since they are the regulating agency when it comes to firearms, their opinion carries some weight. You could call it a peanut butter sandwich, if you like.
