Not all 1911's are quality. External thumb safety shouldn't have anything to do with it, it can be accidentally switched off and you're left with very short, sometimes very light, trigger. Not sure why he would think a Sig or 1911 is "safer" than say a Glock or an XD based on safety devices built into the gun...

In my opinion that's pretty biased to say a firearm is safer based on external safety. IMO all firearms are safe if you're not stupid enough to ignore the basic rules of firearm safety.. A Glock is just as safe as a 1911 or X gun as long as you're not an idiot and know how to properly handle a firearm. Dude sounds like an oldschool guy and to be bias against newer firearms (from what you express) is just ignorant.. The best safety IMO is to keep your Fking finger off the trigger

Any gun in my hand is safe in over 40yrs of shooting I have never hurt myself or anyone else,doesn't get much safer than that. Guns are only as safe or dangerous as it's handler.

discussing which pistol is the safest is like comparing a-holes, everyone has one. No pistol that I know of will fire w/o user interaction, whether it be in the user's hands, or loose in the user's rucksack (bad idea) while in a condition other than 4.

Personally I feel safer with a handgun that has a very deliberate trigger pull. I have a 1911 with a very light & short trigger pull (probably around 2 lbs), and a glock 19 with a trigger pull of around 4lbs. Even though the 1911 has an external safety, I feel much more comfortable with the Glock. The 1911 is amazing to shoot, but if I had to carry something, I'd prefer the Glock or a DA/SA type set up like the Sig.

Safe handgun......

The questions to ask would be : SAFE in which way?Less likely to have an accidental discharge? Safe because its reliable ? Safe because it will not fire if dropped? Safe (EASY and SIMPLE) to use for a novice? Easy to tell if its loaded?

I do know for a fact (not just opinion) that a S&W 4" DA ONLY 38/357 revolver , is safer than a "hair trigger" series 70 1911 45ACP for a novice to use.

My point is that the ROSTER has nothing to do with SAFETY. IMHO.

BUT I must say that SOME handguns are safer than others.

Well, there is a bit of truth to that actually. To be on the roster, the gun has to pass some drop tests and stuff.

Sure there is dumb stuff on there too, like the loaded chamber indicator and magazine disconnect. But that's mostly to make the gun safer for unsafe people.

But, as we all know by now, you can still shoot yourself in the leg with any gun just by bypassing the safety rules.

But then ... that's (in theory) why you have to pass the Handgun Safety test, and you have to show the FFL your safe handling skills.
