    Safe Handguns???

    Greetings,

Despite someones own personal feelings about safe handguns, I say that the main 'safety' is the handguns user. That being said, why do some (many) say that 1911 handguns are 'safer' than 'other' handgun types such as Glock/XD/ etc? Is it because that 1911's have an external safety? If so, being mechanical device it is subject to failure despite being of the highest quality. There is a firearms instructor at Iron Sights in Oceanside who has told me that he thinks that only 1911's and Sigs are the safest types of handguns. Your thoughts please...

Actually the firearms instructor does not sell any guns of any type, he just works as an instructor at the range as a side business. He is an 'old school' guy from many years ago probably Vietnam and other conflicts.

Safety is with the user, a human being; not some grip safety, de-cocker, or any other mechanical device. A mechanical device is something that can fail and does not replace human common sense.

+1 on the human factor really makes any firearm dangerous or safe.

I don't own any plastic guns (unless you count the new Ruger SR22) and from what I understand, the Glocks and XDs are just semi auto DA revolvers functionally, except you get the trigger safety. Seem pretty safe to me and every person I ever see carrying any kind of 1911 is usually carrying, "cocked and locked" so I assume that is just as safe.

While the XD might not have an external safety it has the same grip style safety that a 1911 does, so his point is invalid by default.

If I had to choose one as to which is the safest, I would probably pick the HK P7 series.

depends on what you mean my safe

there are many cases of glocks blowing up with factory ammo

Many people feel that the more safetys, the better.
The grip safety on a 1911 is designed to prevent fireing unless the gun is gripped.
There have been a few documented case of them going off in backpacks, etc.

No safety is foolproof, as demonstrated by that SEAL a few months back.

the safest hand gun is the one that is banned, according to the Kalifornia politicians

Safe handguns are on the list.
Unsafe handguns are not on the list.
                          That was easy.

                            Safe handguns ?

Handguns that are easy for an AVERAGE user to operate and that will not fire when dropped are generally safe handguns.

Things like loaded chamber indicator or magazine disconnect DO NOT MAKE HANDGUNS ANY SAFER.

Firing pin safety helps. Decocker does too. (rather than lowering hammer manually ), Not having a super light trigger also helps.

Safe? Is not safe, is gun.

But seriously, the 1911 and Sigs are totally different systems, SA and DA/SA w/decocker. Doesn't make sense to make that broad generalization. Sounds to me like an old duffer who knows EVERYTHING about guns and damn you young whippersnappers who question his authority on all things gun. And get off his lawn.
"Are you bringing in any weapons?"
                              "Of course not!"
                              "You're not changing anything."
