Front Sight runs good courses, I've taken Defensive handgun, and Tactical Shotgun courses. I learned a lot and improved both shooting and guns handling skills by leaps and bounds. I had a great time, but I know many folks can't get past the self-promoting, narcissistic sales tactics of the creepy mustachioed owner, but I just laugh and ignore it.

The course certificates are legit. they get handed out to members as bonus promotions, and FS uses them as a way to get new customers to try them out.
I actually have a 4 day Defensive Handgun plus 30 state CCW one that I put up on ebay today...If you're interested, make me a decent offer and I'll pull it down and give it to you (I'd rather give it to a CalGunner).

Either way, I think you'll get a lot out of a course regardless of where you take it, and have a lot of fun in the process!

I've trained with a few different instructors in SoCal that I like.

TJ Johnson teaches through his company allsafedefense.com. I've taken three of his courses and they've always been very helpful and shockingly affordable. (The ammo costs are the primary expense)

I've also trained with Uli Gebhardt, who now teaches for Suarez International. He's a very helpful, very knowledgeable instructor who teaches a wide array of skills, from close-range gunfighting to knives to saiga rifles.

Oh, also, for $50, get the Magpul Dynamics Art of the Dynamic Handgun. Aside from listening to those guys attempt to speak well, it's really helpful and eye-opening.

These guys are in the San Jose area, worth the drive. Having a defensive pistol course in a couple weeks. Highly recommend these classes.

If you haven't heard of The Academy of St. Crispian yet, you should look into it. Great instructor at a great price:

There is also GrayOps in Sacramento which seems a closer drive than one to FrontSight.

If I were in your position I'd look for something close to your area and take your first training course there. 100.00 for two days is cheap but you need to factor in the drive, time off and accommodations as well. Personally I wouldn't drive from Oakland to FrontSight with the many viable closer options in your area.

I just finished my 2nd 4 day pistol course. Each time i feel that I have gotten better. I am going back in April for a shotgun course.
I agree about the marketing system he uses is the worst but the training is good
