    .45acp vs .357 sig

I've seen threads about 9mm vs .45 , but whats your opinion on .45 vs 357 sig as a home defense or ccw round?

.357 sig doesn't offer much over 9mm. It wouldn't seem that way on paper, but it does in testing.

Most .357 sig loads use bullets designed around 9mm velocities. Nobody really designs bullets specifically for .357 sig velocities and pressures.

I believe with the right choice of bullets they are both the same...which is adequate for SD, but .45 is much more common and available. I'm not sure if it is any cheaper...

.357 sig is not a bad load, great target load and in pinch would cause someone a world of hurt. For home defense it doesn't have the knock down power that the .45 does. .45 is a slower round and hits harder, which is what you want. Slower the round the more soft tissue damage it does.

.357sig ammo has become more cheaper lately. I have never shot anyone with either, but the .357sig is unquestionably a much flatter shooter out past 25 yards

.357 sig is a necked down .40 case, pushing a smaller grain projectile at MUCH faster velocities than a .45. It's a much flatter shooting round. With that said, I'd take a 230 gn HP, for self defense over a 127 gn anyday.

Later on down the road, I need to buy myself a beater .357 p226. I really didn't know it was a great round untill recently, considering how it has good stopping power and penetration.

                  Oh, not this again...

45 = heavier, bigger, slower, little chance of hydrostatic shock
357 Sig = Lighter, smaller, faster, very good chance of hydrostatic shock

Pick what you think is important and go with it. Neither will do you any good if you can't hit your target.

All else being equal, 357 Sig is generally harder to find and more difficult to reload. I like popular loads, 9mm, 40 S&W, and 45ACP. All will do the job if you can do yours.

Do you think that slower round post is wrong? Cause its right

I own and have shot both caliber. I still favor the 45acp over the 357 sig.
If I remember it correctly the 357sig comes really close to the 357magnum.

357sig tears flesh pretty darn good. I would not feel under gunned with one.

Upwards of 1550 fps out of a Glock 31 with some loads I've tried.

that's right, because a 220 grain .300WM does a lot less damage at 2800FPS than a 220 grain .45ACP does at 850FPS, how silly of me to question your wisdom

that would explain why all the HD ammo manufactures are loading their .45ACP down to 660FPS, so they do more damage :shakeshead:

                              Yup, you're right.

Thats why the big, slow .30 carbine is much more effective than a small, fast 5.56 NATO. Oh, wait, nevermind

The main thing I look at in a rounds performance is the Ft-Lbs of energy. As long as the round doesn't over-penetrate, then it has transferred all of its energy into the attacker.

                              I would rather hit someone with a 600 ft-lb 357sig than a 450 ft-lb 45acp.

EDIT: and five.five-six beats me to the punch....
