Well I finally broke down and did all the running around and printing up the ATF letter to Franklin Armory, and the CA AW laws for a packet to go in my range bag with my AR pistol. Not because I worry about the pistol itself, but because I finally broke down and put a vertical front grip on it. It measures 26.5 inches, so it falls outside of what the ATF considers to be an AOW.
So I got to the range and ran a several of boxes through it. I have to say that the VFG makes a huge difference in terms of accuracy. You are able to tuck the buffer tube up into your cheek and hold it very tightly. It also helps steady the front of the gun. My groups out to just over 20 yards all tightened up considerably. And it is just much more comfortable to shoot. Follow-up shots are significantly faster as well.
In addition to testing out the VFG, I also got to try out that 80% lower I made at the last build party in Carlsbad. The anodizing held up beautifully, and was still slick at the end of the session. The fouling literally wiped off of it when I was done. No solvents or scrubbing needed. That was nice.
About half way through the range session, the gunsmith that works there came out to see what was making all the noise. I have a 10.5 inch barrel with a compensator on it. It is um... a bit loud. I have known this particular smith for over 10 years, and he is one of the most knowledgeble people I know, in any field. He chuckled at the VFG. He declined to shoot it, however. Even though he agrees that it is perfectly legal, he doesn't want to have anything to do with them. I had to laugh at that. The ATF and DOJ have people so afraid of these kinds of things that even people who know they are kosher don't want to risk run-ins with cops or ATF field agents who don't understand the laws. If anybody else wants to try this, get your paperwork in order so that you can show the uninformed in black and white. But I have to say, it brought the whole AR pistol thing to a whole new level for me. It went from noisy range toy to accurate noisy range toy.
