    Another PPT question

I did a search and came up with nothing.

I dros'd a gun yesterday that a friend sold to me. He and I both have DOJ locks galore but did not bring one with us to the PPT. At the end of the process they tacked on an additional 6$ for a DOJ approved lock. I told them that I would bring a DOJ lock with me to the store upon pick-up so that they could take away that extra charge. They said it is not possible for me to do this and that they "have" to sell me a DOJ lock whether I bring one in or not.
Can someone link me to where it says the FFL "has" to charge for a DOJ approved lock?

    Thanks in advance!

If you have A DOJ-approved lock with a receipt no older than 30-days before pickup, no, you do not need to buy another; must bring both the lock and the receipt.

      See the wiki -- http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Bu...es.2C_and_Laws

So, the usual way to beat this is: stop at Walmart, buy a lock but do not open the package, bring the receipt and lock to pick up the gun, stop at Walmart on the way back and return the lock.

Using Walmart like that would make me feel sleazy. They use up man hour time to ring up the sale, process the return, and restock the lock. if it didn't make me feel sleazy something would be wrong with me.

Bullseye in San Rafael did the same thing to me, I told them I'd bring one at pick uptime along with it's receipt, they said no the law said I had to have it at DROS or they could not do the transfer, they were wrong but it cost me the ten bucks they charged me. Total BS.

Too bad neither of you thought of bringing a lock to a PPT.....duh.

I found a gun store that won't accept the Walmart receipt. Saying because it says "Gun Lock" instead of "Winchester gun lock" on it that they can't accept it. I pointed out the bar code numbers matched both the back of the package and the receipt, nope they would not accept it stating that DoJ wouldn't let them.

That was the beginning of the PPT process, after a very long rest of the process I realized this shop was just very very picky about everything. I still need to return my lock as it didn't even get a chance to be used.

I cheerfully pay the price for a lock and give it to the FFL afterwards. Why would I begrudge them a little bit of profit after they spent their man hours on a PPT. Bring them donuts or something too! I usually also buy stuff at the FFL that I don' really need right then. I want them to make money and stay in business.

Going to walmart twice is not worth $6 to me, but thats just my opinion. $6 really isn't that bad, most places are $8-12 for the lock.

The shop is wrong about the law requiring THEM to sell you a lock. However, they seem to be erring on the side of caution and not trying to take advantage of you. If they sold you a $20 lock, I'd beach about it. But, it appears that they didn't so that and are just trying to protect you and themselves. I'd just smile and pay it.

Good reason to deal with kitchen table FFLs, they usually have a box o' locks provided by the state/county and just give em to ya.

There are several online tools that generate receipts...just type in the info and print. Now you will never be without a current 30 day receipt for the two gunlocks you keep in your car at all times.
