    1911 experts step inside

I returned a new to me SA Mil Spec to the mothership since it was ejecting brass erratically, FTFeed and some of the brass was torn up. I just received it back and the letter enclosed with it said the following was done to it:

    .480 gauged slide
    tuned extractor
    tuned ejector
    polished feed ramp
    reamed barrel

most are self explanatory, except .480 gauged slide??? reamed barrel??? can anyone school me on what those are and why do it?

    thanks

it is a Springfield Armory Mil Spec, total turn around time to Springfield and back to me is 15 days. Their Customer Service was great, they were not interested in how long i owned it, or any history. All they wanted to know was why I was not happy with it and where to send the Fed Ex. pickup

My SA GI .45 was also having issues with extracting and not chambering the last round on a magazine. SA did exactly the same thing to mine as they did to yours, except the slide part. Mine is 100% reliable now. It took them less than a week to do the work on mine and they paid postage there and back. Superb customer service from SA.

Personally I do not like to send out guns, even if they are under warranty due to ridiculous shipping costs. If it is an easy fix, I always learn how to do it myself and buy the appropriate tools.

Rumblebee hit the guaged slide one on the head.
A poorly tuned extractor may also cause stove piping, case crushing, and feeding failures.
A poorly tuned ejector can cause brass to hit you in the face and to land erratically. I prefer to have my brass fly to the right of my right shoulder.
Polish feed ramp, not really necessary unless you have some machine marks.
Reamed Barrel, crucial if your gun does not feed SWC or HP's.

Well someone mentioned that SA paid for shipping both ways. Wow, you can't beat that! Plus when the gun comes back, you know that someone specifically fixed it and did some QA on it before sending it back. That's pretty awesome!

Sure, you don't want a gun that HAS to be sent back, but sometimes it just happens. Lemons in every batch maybe!

Think of all the perfectly fine SA 1911's you're NOT hearing about. Plus, I think what is important is that the problem is fixed every time and in a timely manner as well.

Barrels get their chambers reamed. Your chamber might have been a little tight.

I hope it runs well for you.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's had SA's for years with zero issues. But, if and when I do, I know it'll be taken care of correctly and quickly. I'll buy SA anyday
