How about a Colt Army? Maybe even a Vaquero?

My M&P 9mm is considered DAO I suppose. But the pull, although a little long, is so light I think of it as SAO.

Going to follow this discussion as I've never had anything that wasn't single action only - current pistol is a Browning HP in .40

Basically you want a 1911 which has eliminated the manual safety and move the grip safety from the back of the grip to the front of the grip - like a reverse S&W 'lemon-squeezer' model?

Get an XD with a powder river trigger kit. It's sao with a short take up and reset.

to OP, I know the PPQ is new to the market, but try one and you'll see it is the closest trigger setup to what you describe. I shoot 1911 exclusively after selling my CZ75 and believe me when I say the PPQ is the closest to a 1911 trigger, but with more uptake. The break and reset is unmatched in the polymer handgun category. I've shot the Glock17, M&P, and SR9 when I was looking for a polymer handgun. Ordered the PPQ without handling one because non of the store in CA have it in stock and found my perfect polymer handgun.

You want a 1911 sans manual safety and the grip safety on the front strap... Why?

my XD service model in 40 cal has a total trigger travel of 0.25" from rest to full rearward travel.

The trigger is set at 3.25 lbs. When you first touch the trigger it very easily moves 1/8th of an inch. I ride my trigger in competition, so that the trigger is already prepped or moved that 1/8th. At that point i can feel a definite stopping point to the trigger (although other people may not notice if they are not looking for it, or do not prep the trigger), at this point it takes the 3.25 pounds of pull to move the trigger 1/16th of an inch to get it to break. The trigger then over travels an additional 1/16th. I then have to let the trigger reset by a distance of 3/16ths of an inch to fire again.

My trigger job, bomar 9mm barrel, extended mag release, and dawson FO bomar cut sights were done by Daves Metal Works in Covina, Ca. I dropped the pistol gear extended slide stop and magwell on myself.

I absolutely love the xd pistols. They fit my hand like a glove and I never have to worry about a safety. I should probably use the safety on my ruger mkIII hunter, but I am of the thought that the safety is between your ears and I also forget that my other firearms have safeties because I am used to the xd. I have 25-30K rounds through my 2005 XD.

Well enough free advertisement for Springfield

I just checked the movement on my ruger hunter. The distances are the same as my xd, but it feels like it takes 2-3 times as much force for the trigger to break. It feels more crisp (maybe due to the amount of weight it takes, or different action type) than the xd, but I much prefer the lighter trigger on the xd. The ruger trigger is bone stock just as it came from the factory.

                      Sounds like a good idea,
Ive never shot a P7 so I wouldnt know how that front saftey would feel.
But I say this would be a good trigger set up.
Maybe try to make one! You can be the next "Gaston Glock"

I really dont mind shooting in double action. Actually, I have more fun that way.

                          Repeating history.

Back in the days of ISPC, they would have race guns custom made to similar specs. They tended to have lots of doubling and tripling too. Those specs are so minimal they invite problems.

Before you propose a design, it might be wise to ask why the current design philosophy is what it is. And remember that firearm reliability is probably the most important design feature.
