    Single Shot Exemption Experience

    Hi Everyone! Happy New Year!
Can you tell me your experience with the Single Shot Exemption.
    1. Which FFL dealer did you go?
    2. how much was the fee?
    3. was it risky or a hassle?
    4. do you recomend it?
    5. what gun did you get?

I wanted to get the colt 1911 special combat government but its not in the california roster.

would that be legal if i get one instead at gunbroker(dot)com used or brandnew?

worse comes to worst, if i cant get the scg i might have to settle down for a colt xse govt. i hate the front serrations though. if not where can i have it customized here in the OC area?

    thanks in advance

    1. Valkyrie in Milpitas (Norcal)
    2. None, it was part of the price, probably $50 or so more than other dealers would charge if they could sell them
    3. None at all - took an extra five minutes
    4. Yes
    5. Gen4 G19

I've done a SSE through Parallax Tactical in San Diego. There was no fee because he already had an XDm barrel he could use. It was not a hassle at all and just like any other gun purchase.

Direct Action Solutions is also another great shop in San Diego. They do SSE all the time for 1911s or Gen4 Glocks. They are good people and have great customer service. I would call DAS and ask for a quote. Ask for Colby or Sean.

Also, it's not too much of a drive from La Habra.

I have used Direct Action Solutions in San Diego to SSE a 1911, with another SSE on the way ! There was no hassle involved - the process of installing an extra long barrel and blocking the magwell is done in a few minutes, and likewise the reversal process is just a few more minutes.

As long as you don't mind waiting a little extra (depending on what you want to SSE) I would recommend it. Go on and get the Colt that you have your mind set on.

OC Armory in Laguna Niguel has the HK45 in stock for SSE, I'm not sure about the other off roster guns. www.ocarmory.com

So explain this to me again -- once you've bought this off roster gun that has been "neutered" to hold one shot -- you what? Just unconvert it? Do you have to keep it a single shot in CA? What is the actual legality here, please. Thanks.

once you legally own the gun,

                  you walk out the store
                  you then walk back in
since the gun is legally yours, you can then ask them to take the single shot off

once you legally own the gun you can do whatever you want to it, its basically "gunsmithing" like you would take any of your guns in for gunsmithing nothing is illegal

there is no tricks or illegal business about the SSE conversion , its not that big of a deal it adds an extra 15min on buying a SSE gun, than a regular gun. Alot of ppl think its a big long process, the only thing is hard (well not really nowadays) is finding a shop that will do it

Hmm, I may look into this when I want another pistol. Perhaps G17 Gen 4? Heheheh

                      1. EBR Works
                      2. No fee. I paid a bit more than street price on my new XDM 5.25 Competition, but it was still less than MSRP
                      3. No hassle - if fact much easier than any other purchase I've ever made
                      4. Yes
                      5. SA XDM 9mm 5.25 Competition

                          What caliber/model? I have an XDm 9mm and would love a 5.25" competition 45ACP. I suppose I could just call them/go over there..... :P

Another vote for Micheal at EBRWorks -- same gun as lwlami, too. Easy, painless, professional, courteous.

Also recommend working with Ryan at Table Rock. Same as EBRWorks -- great to work with, and very helpful.

There is absolutely no reason to let that satanic roster have any influence over your purchases!

Sadly a handgun that I really wanted recently expired from the roster (Taurus 24\7) and to date, no one has been able to help me with a SSE for it. And I'm totally cool with it, I understand that the shops will perform SSE's on the high demand firearms since fabricating barrels and such is time consuming and costly.

But unless you want a XDM or gen4 glock, a lot of handguns off roster are tough to SSE if a shop can't do a barrel insert. Just my .02.

But it's definitely better than nothing. THat Sig Scorpion is looking sexy!
