    Colt 1911

    Hi Guys,

Doing some research on 1911s before i buy one, i was thinking of getting a Colt Government series, which i think is close to what army was issued and also since they have 100 year roll mark on some of their models i was thinking it will be a cool to have that rollmark.

Please let me know your opinions and also let me know whats the difference between Colt 70 and 80 series and which one is better.

    Thanks in advance.

Difference between series 70 and 80 is the firing pin safety. Some of the older guys say S70 Colts are more accurate because they don't have the firing pin safety. The purpose of the firing pin safety is in the event of dropping your gun.

As far as Colt 1911's go, do you want the GI model or the more modern approach?

For GI Colt go 01991(it's a S80), for a more modern gun go with the 01980XSE(also S80). If you don't want the firing pin safety go with a Series 70 reproduction or fork over the cash for an original series 70 one.

There are other models to take into consideration if you want a rail, bitone or Colt Custom Shop gun.

    Here's some examples:

These are two of the Colt 1911's that are on the roster:
    O1991

    and the O1980XSE

    Here are some other models:

Colt Rail Gun, basically a railed XSE, in the $1000-1200 range.(Available in Blued, Bitone and SS)

Colt Combat Elite, basically a bitone XSE.

This is the priciest Colt 1911 currently in production:

Colt special combat government, most expensive model they currently produce.

I only included full size models. Hope this helped.

      Great info.

O1091 is not on the roster? its the stainless version.

BTW, i want the GI model, with 100 years of service roll mark ofcourse.

      Thanks

Weather it is or ISN'T on the roster doesn't really matter, off roster Colts can be purchased through something we call single shot exemption(SSE). The roster is CURRENTLY more of a matter of convenience, a gun being on the roster means you can buy it at any store without any issue or particular shops you have to go to.

As far as the 01091, looks like it is on the roster.

The O1991 and O1091 are great! I cant say enough good things about them. I absolutely love mine. I have the O1991 with the 100 year roll mark. I too wanted a Colt 1911 that was basic just like the old GI style. It fits the bill perfectly.

If you want one with the roll mark you may want to get the ball rolling. I dont know if Colt will continue to put the rollmark on in 2012 or not.

Don't forget about the modern S70s (Which are technically like pre-series 70) since the new ones no longer come with the finger-collet bushings.

I'll admit that IDK about their roster status, but these are beautiful and I want one damn it!

I just wish the newer ones came with the classic medallion grips like the old school S70s did.

I like both of my Colts. But, I do like the new features, such as ambi-safety, beaver tail, FCS, adjustable trigger, and so on.

                          Colt-45,

Thanks for posting. Very informative and the pictures go the extra mile. Great community on Calguns because of members like you.

Now time for me to purchase my XSE.

Something to note, but the O1980XSE seems to come with the "duckbill" grip safety and not the "beavertail" as shown.

They are all missing the front strap checkering. That's why I like my springers
