    which gun?

I'm a newbie, want to buy an 1911. Love the 45 but I'm wondering if the 9mm makes more sense because of the cost of ammo. And you can install some gizmo to shoot 22? I"m only buying one gun. Not concerned about home safety, this gun will be used at range and possibly comp shooting if there's a division for old farts who can't shoot. So which gun??

1911 .45, buy what you like since you are only getting one gun just for fun.

If it's for HD, working on getting better at shooting and buying more handguns, I'd go for a 9mm. In your situation any 1911 will do fine.

1911 in 45acp and you can get a 22 conversion kit for it.

In my opinion if you get a 1911, make it .45 ACP

First 1911 should be in .45 ACP, then get as many 9mm 1911s as you want.

This is good advice! For both self/home defense, competition and practicing/plinking. Practicing with a .22 1911 is probably the most efficient way to get good at it! (ie, drawing from holster, reloading)

.45 acp cuz Browning designed that cartridge for the 1911.

Whoa...land slide for the .45's, but my vote goes to the 9mm.

With the cost of ammo a factor, and if I can only pick one, it would definitely be 9mm.
My 9mm 1911 gets more range time than the .45's.
It's an extremely fun nine, in fact planning for a bull barrel 9mm build when budget allows.

i too, was in your position earlier this year. i ended up getting a 9mm, after trying out everything, as my first ever pistol. very quickly i wanted more power, and wound up picking up a kimber 1911. if i could do it over, i would have 2) 1911's ! imo, getting a 9mm, is like getting a v-6 in your car. lol. get a 1911, an American one! gl

                      I'm glad I don't have to support a 45 habit.

I have a couple of 1911s in 45acp and one in 9mm. The one in 9mm gets shot more and very enjoyable at the range. As for the V6 power, if you are a skilled reloader and your 1911 is set up with a fully supported chamber, a quick swap to a 16lb recoil spring can have you shooting 9mm Major loads. That's a 124 grain jacketed bullet at 1335 FPS. That's like a V6 with turbos.

                            .45 ACP, it's the classic round for a 1911

                              .45

Get the .45 and reloading equipment. .45 is inexpensive to shoot if you make your own loads. .45 is great for home defense. Reloading gets you away from the TV and computer, too.

Add the .22 conversion kit, and you have 2 guns that feel the same in your hands.
