    Rust Prevention

I will be going to study abroad for the next six months and want to do all I can to protect my handguns from rust and other potential damages as a result of long storage.

I plan to clean all my firearms really well with slip2000 or MPro7 for any carbon. Then maybe wipeout or montana x for the copper (Haven't tried either...anyone have input???? I know PRC329 was trying the wipeout...any input???)

Then the lube. That's my real question. Anyone tried Eezox? Will it protect for about 6 months? Or should I just use Corrosion X? And are you suppose to put a layer of lube (CLP) if using rust preventative? If so, before or after the application of the rust preventative?

I saw this article which recommended Eezox or Corrosion X, but it seems like Corrosion X can be bought locally. Also easier to apply since I don't need to heat it up after application or first strip it of all previous oil and lube.

Test of best rust-proofing products for corrosion protection, anti-rust, tool and gun storage. Breakfree, Break-Free CLP, Corrosion-X, Corrosion X, Eexoz, FP-10, FP10, Sheath, Mobil 1, Militech, Rem-Oil, Rig, Grease, Cosmoline, Slip 2000, Tetra tested. Salt spray tests on rust preventatives. Also dessicants, goldenrod, Vapor, Bore-Store silicon bags for storage. 6mm BR Benchrest precision shooting. Load Data, Message Boards, Dies, gunsmiths. Reloading, shooting, hunting, and varminting.

Now for the safe. Its a small safe kept in my bedroom. Since I'm in Pasadena, I don't think its very humid over here or has great temperature changes. I plan on using the socks recommended in the above article and a pack of desiccant (got it from turners, its actually pretty big for the size of my safe 1.3 cubic feet and desiccant is good for 60 cubic feet).

Don't know if I really need a golden rod. What do you guys think?
Anything else I should be doing?

The goods I'm protecting are: Glock 19, Glock 21, HK USPf45, Sig P220 Carry

I found that a thorough cleaning and then wiping them top to bottom, inside and out with a new Marine Tuf Cloth, letting that dry, then a good coat of oil worked great for a few years. And I live by the beach.

I tried desiccant but, at the time, I wasn't opening my safe often enough to change them and got more rust instead of less. Once I went with the treatment above and removed the desiccant packs, I've been quite happy.
Of course, I shoot a lot more these days, but for a couple of years, my rifles sat more or less unattended and remained rust-free.

For long term storage you cant beat VCI impegnated wrappers. There are kits where you wrap your firearms and seal them in plastic bags, the vapors protect the steels. http://www.corrosioncontrol.ca/pdf/VW35H.pdf
The paper is available commercially, one of my customers ships part to me with it, I can ask them for a sourse if you like?

This Nox-Rust Vapor Wrapper seems to be pretty interested. I would greatly appreciate if you can ask your customer where I can get some. Hopefully I can you buy a small quantity and not a ream as in the pdf description.

Here is a place that sells the VCI plastic bags. They sell not only to the firearms inudstry, but also to machine tool companies.

For long term storage, this is the route I would go:

          FOR SALE:

The VCI bags are supposed to work well.

motorcycle chain wax. sprays on liquid and sets up like a light coat of cosmoline. spray the guns liberally and get all surfaces wet, then stick em in plastic bags and tape em up with as little air as possible( stick a dessicant in the bag with it) should be fine for a few years. ive been doing parts like this for years and years.

                        CLP

CLP works fine for me on the safe queens.

+1 here on CLP. I shoot all of them accept the Taurus PT92 and a s&w .22 that I bought in the early 90's. So these two are the only once that do not get regular attention: CLP once a year to lube and clean, then they go back into the foam and box that they came in. No rust so far.

The only rust I've seen is on the main spring housing of one of my 1911's. It's from the moisture and sweat of my hand that I don't clean of thoroughly each time I shoot it (the checkering makes it difficult). I am OK with this as it will take years before I need to replace this part.

I recently bought these for all of my handguns:

Heard lots of good things about them. Haven't had them long enough to say if they work.

Dude, you are asking us about how to prevent a GLOCK from rusting?? Easy: do not store it at the bottom of the Pacific for the next six months and it won't rust. Even if you did store it in the pacific for 6 months, it would come out fine with exception of some of the small springs.

Seriously though, I use Eezox, have for years, and all of my guns are in perfect condition. I cannot recommend Eezox highly enough - it is fantastic as a lube, cleaner and rust preventative (as the pictures clearly show).

Since you live in CA which is not very humid, I'd say buy a large dessicant can from a gun shop or Brownells, stick it in your safe and forget about it. Clean your guns thoroughly of course and put a decent coat of Eezox on them inside and out and they will be perfect.

Don't you have to plug in the Golden Rod? I'd be a little uncomfortable leaving something plugged in completely unattended for 6 months, so I'd forget it.

Where are ya gonna study abroad?
