    Dammit!

I just took apart my SA 1911 Loaded 9mm for the first time and put an idiot mark on it! i should have taped the frame but I was too lazy to walk over to get the tape.

I've taken apart my other 1911's plenty of times without scratching it up. So pissed at myself.

    Heretic!

That sucks, I'm a new 1911 owner, so I'm still pretty worried about doing this.
Too many hobbies, Too little time.

    Mind you, I'm 5'7", 180, with a visible Ab...

Yikes! Sorry to hear about that, but for once, my Better Half can't say I'm responsible since I was nowhere near your 1911

In my defense that stupid slide lock looked suspiciously jagged. This is a brand new unfired gun and when I took it apart there were already scuffs along the edge of the hole so I kind of had a bad feeling about it. Lesson learned though: TAPE YOUR SH*T UP.

At least now you can get it hard chromed and not have to worry about that anymore

Been there, done that. Just like the first door ding on your new car. Time heals all wounds.

What I have discovered is that it seems EVERY 1911 manufacturer's take down latch goes in a bit differently. By that I mean some slide right in with no force or effort whatsoever (hot knife through butter), while others you must struggle with and force (thus the slip and mark) it in. Amazing how sharp that edge is...even gliding it on the frame with no pressure will produce a mark.

All comes down to the plunger. If I try to put the take down latch in and get any reasonable resistance, I back off and take out the safety and then pull out the plunger. Takedown latch slips in and then I put the plunger and safety back in. Nothing to possibly scratch with the safety removal/replacement. Yeah, it's a few more steps, but is GUARANTEES absolutely ZERO resistance in putting the take down latch back in.

if it's stainless you can probably "fix" it pretty easily. the grey scratch pad mimics SA's stainless pretty closely.

I've done it once, that was my first & only time to date.

No prob. It's the truth. Most of us have been there before. If it was a $5000 trophy gun, well, then that would suck. If it's a shooter, like a SA loaded is, then shoot the **** out of it and don't worry about the "idiot mark". If that truly is the mark of an idiot, well, then I'm screwed.

                          Enjoy your new gun
