Kimber stainless target 9mm

I am picking up a Kimber 9mm Stainless Target on the 16th. I would love feedback on the poll as to ohow I should modify the pistol.

1. Finish the gun black, replace adjustables with fixed ledge sights, short recoil guide rod and plug, and checker the front strap.

2. Just replace the sights with fixed ledge sights.

3. Checker front strap, swap sights, short recoil guide rod and plug.

4.Leave it alone

5. Other options...

Leave it alone first. Shoot a few hundred-thousand rounds. Modify what you don't like.

^ I agree. Shoot it first to see what you want improvements on and then put in the personal touch.

I like to field strip or detail strip if possible to polish, oil and grease all the parts that I can think of before the first range trip.

Every gun I buy get resprung, a reliability job and an action job before ever going to a range. I am just looking at feedback on the rest. I am a little torn on what road to take

Don't you want to shoot the stock gun first to set up a baseline before you modify it? If you know what you want exactly in the gun then by all means go for it.

My use is up in the air, My modifications will dictate its use and purpose. If I mod with option 1 then it will become a defensive/tactical and teaching weapon. If I do something different it may become just a range/IDPA gun

Not necessarily. I do not need to fire the gun to know factory springs are not very good, factory triggers suck, and all production 1911s can benefit from a reliability Job, even if the gun is reliable, it never hurts to make it more efficient I have been doing this a long time (15-16 yrs), and the beauty of the 10 day wait is that I can allow my creative juices flow and post on here for feedback. It is fun.

It just happens I have a Springfield Armory 1911 Loaded Target in 9mm. I'm keeping the adjustable sights, but I already made a target style fiber optic front sight for it. Currently checkering the front strap. Done the trigger job with the stock parts. Replaced the mainspring and titanium firing pin. My plan for it in the future is flat top and serrate the top of the slide, serrate the back of the slide, install a bull barrel with a Briley supported reverse plug like the one in the picture.

Short of putting a magwell on it, leave it alone. It's a nice setup as is.

I own one and I can tell you with 90% certainty that you will be replacing the extractor within the first month. Don't brother other changes until you get it running right. I wouldn't even think about another extractor from Kimber - go find a Wilson or a other top maker that offers a SS .38 or 9mm extractor and buy it. That was the only problem I've had with mine.

The sights are a real pain to replace - when you decide to do that. I'd plan to have a good smith do that work for you.

I ordered the gun simple...no front serrations, solid trigger, front checkering..etc..but with the black coating which has worn and the gun has a bit of rust on the frame near the mainspring housing...black stuff worn on many parts of the gun...

having two springer target sight 9mm govt...

one has the short trigger..soon so will the other....

the stupid full length guide rods make fair weights when catfishing in fast water..only fair...don't ask...but as guide rods they suck eggs...

I have never needed the checkering on the 9mm's...shoot it before you decide...IMHO

as to the sights...I assume your talking about John Harrisons design...http://shop.harrisoncustom.com/produ...ear-sight.aspx... if you are getting the target sight 9mm...

the ledge sights on the fixed sight gun ... for what?...single hand racking?...no spring guide rod erections thingee and you can use it on tables etc... and the ejection port works well enough, it ain't like it's got a strong spring or anything....but if you like the looks...then go for the ledge thing...

the black stuff wears pretty fast for a given value of fast but you likely know that and like it anyway...my curse/job..is to wear the finish off of my guns as completely as possible...I consider it something of a mission...show all of the character I can on my guns... no safe queens anymore...they all went to collectors...well except for a gift from a friend that cherry colt sits in the safe...that and the cherry first year production under 200 serial number 38 super colt...that don't get shot much nor carried ever... I like to shoot but I aint the stupid one in the family...

I own one kimber..sold my 38 super cause it didn't work...one kimber the UCII in 45acp cause I won it at a friends of the NRA dinner.. it now has 24/7s on it and a greider (sp?) short trigger and I finally like it well enough to carry it after is has languished in the gun box for about 2 years...carried it today..it's more of a 2nd gun, fashion accessory thing for me..but cooler...

I think you'll love the 9mm.. I shoot mine very well and can get some really fast shot splits and times with it...congrats and good luck

Your intended use should dictate what you should do to it...if it was me, I would make it a game gun since it has adjustable sights already, and I would checker the front strap and leave the FLGR even though I hate them, but the added weight would control recoil better even though it's only a 9mm it would add just a little bit IMO

these full size guns..even shooting cor-bon dont exactly recoil...recoil is like saying a full size H-bar 5.56 with 55 gr 223 ammo (as opposed to something fierce like say...55 gr 5.56 ammo) is a bruiser...really you got to shoot one of these to believe it.. you know your shooting a full size and power gun... yet there is no real recoil..the sights barely even move.. I've litterally shot .22lrs that were harder to control...the extra weight of the stupid FLGR...far out weighs the complexity to break the gun down.... even if it only takes a paper clip or something to take it apart..
