Grease causing malunctions on my 1911

I tried using Shooters Choice gun grease on the slide rails and locking lugs for the first time on my SA Trophy Match. I usually use M Pro 7, Gun Butter, or synthetic motor oil only on my pistols. I took it to the range and out of 50 rounds, it failed to lock back on the last round every time with my Chip Power mags. I never had this problem with the prior 600ish rounds I shot through it. Only thing I changed was the grease so I wiped it off and replaced it with gun oil and the result was 200 flawless rounds with no lock back issues. Only conclusion I came up with is that the grease was slowing down the slide and with my usual 18 1/2 pound recoil spring it wasn't fully cycling? Maybe weak WWB added to it? Anyone else experience this? I always felt any lube was fine but I never heard of a lube causing malfunctions.

I have been having this talk about gun oil or gun grease. After reading yours and someone else who had a problem with grease getting to cold and became stiff, I think I will stick with a really good gun oil. My brother in law uses oil only in his 1911, and he has had it for many years with no problems.

My conclusion and opinion is to just stick with oil. Regular maintenance should be done anyway, which will keep the gun working fine. This is what I have gathered in my research.

SA Trophy Match is a tight frame to slide fit, so sometimes a little grease will make it even tighter. Also the tight bushing to barrel fit will slow it down. I doubt it but also check for burrs on the bushing that could cause the slow down.

Same experience with my SA 9mm 1911, and I used Tetra gun grease on the slides, and when I release the slide to load a round it was like slow motion. I clean it off and ran with normal Shooter's Choice FP10 oil and it ran like a champ.

Better tight than loose. After breaking it with hundreds of rounds it'll loosen up a little. I'm going to switch back to grease after break in.

I use Slide-Glide on my Dan Wessons. Never had issues with it, and it stays where you pit it.

Slide Glide lite used on my SIGs, Glocks, Kahr, Beretta Nano, Ruger, RIA, Remington, SKS, AR15, AK47.....etc. Just a very light coating on frame/slide rails does it.

            NO feeding/extraction issues to report.

Maybe the follower spring has gotten weaker since the first 600 rounds and isn't pushing the slide lock upwards. I've never heard of that much trouble just from greasing a gun properly..

                18-1/2 lb spring

Try a 14, you'll be amazed how much better the gun shoots and no, it won't hurt anything or make it wear faster. My SV in 40 has well over 10,000 rounds through it with a 10lb spring and its fine.
                where are my pistol mags?

10lb spring? Na thanks. I use Milcomm on my pistols including 1911, no problems using 18.5lb spring too.

I usually use 16 pound springs but I never had problems with the 18 1/2 on my 1911's... I tried the grease on my Glock 35 and SA loaded 1911 with no issues although my loaded has loose frame/slide fit.

I like how the grease doesnt run but its made me paranoid and I'm going to stick with oil.

Weather being cold and the WWB powder might be temp sensitive to where pressure went down a little, combined with a slowing effect of cold grease. It can happen. On a tightly fitted slide and frame I would used oil instead of grease.

When I shot my GC with 230 hardball I used a 20" recoil spring.
As for grease I use Wilsons Ultima-Lube or Rigs .
                          Sorry about your problems.

I use Slide Glide Lite on my 22lr semiautos and Slide Glide Standard on all my other Sigs. Also what was the temperature where you were shooting?

I've been using Shooter's Choice grease on all my 1911's and some other guns for the past 5 years with no problems. 1911's I used it on include: 2 Wilson's, 2 Les Baer's. 3 Springfields, a Colt and an Ed Brown. It's worked like a charm on them all.
