How many rounds does it take before the value of your gun goes down? 250? 500? 1000?

How many rounds?
Tags: None -
Not necessarily the round count as the wear and tear on the gun.
I’ve seen tore up guns with only a couple hundred rounds, and I’ve paid a fair price for some guns with thousands of rounds through ‘em.
There is no easy answer to that question.
Well, I guess it would be 1 (the first - even though most guns come with “test rounds fired” from factories) BNIB is not the same as LNIB, is not the same as used, ad finum - how one associates value based on that criteria I have no idea...
Unless you plan on putting it in a glass box, shoot away, it is after all just a gun.Last edited by Ubermcoupe; 12-02-2011, 10:59 AM.Hauoli Makahiki Hou

It all depends on the buyer. The buyer will always try to negotiate a lower price.
But to me personally, if you tell me your gun has been shot 500 times, I will probably not buy it unless it's something I really, really wanted (there aren't many of those) and can't be found new anymore. I will most likely pay for a new firearm.Comment

500 rounds..??..heck, it's not even due for it's first oil change...It all depends on the buyer. The buyer will always try to negotiate a lower price.

I have a Glock that has 10,000 rounds on her. And since I keep it clean and free from scratches...you would never know. Round count really doesn't matter much on these new weapons. However, thru an older revolver I would have to say it would matter. Some older revolvers have to be retimed and tighened up once in a while. A Glock you just change out the springs (under $20) once every 5,000 rounds.

If the gun in good condition I don't care about a gun having a round count of 1000. I have guns that actually ran better after they had that many rounds downrange. I am almost more put off by low round counts, I just get the feeling they are hiding something about the gun. I know that is not always the case it is just my feeling when I hear low round counts.sigpicComment

If you're buying a gun as a $$$ investment, then you don't fire anything from it. Or you buy 2, one to keep and the other to fire.
Otherwise, just fire the darn thing, and take care of it. That's what they're made for. Who buys a gun with the intention of firing no more than X amount of rounds?
I always find it suspicious when I see ads for used guns that have "~50 rounds down the pipe"... I fired about 250 rounds immediately the 1st time I took my gun to the range...Comment

1 round.
You fire it once and the value has just dropped. Just like the second you pull out of the car dealerships lot you just lost $2K on your car. Like others have said it all depends on the condition. My G17 has about 30,000 rounds through it, all on original parts and it looks NIB. I have taken care of it but its also a beast of a gun that can take a lot of abuse.Comment

I agree...I think everyone pulls round counts out their ***. Who the heck actually counts and catalogs every round they fire? I guess some guys do. I personally don't worry about it. Condition of the gun is all that matters to me when I'm buying. Pretty obvious to see if a gun's been cared for.Comment

I keep track of my round count for the first 1,000 so that I know when it's officially "broken in".I agree...I think everyone pulls round counts out their ***. After 1,000 rounds I stop counting.Originally posted by G. Michael HopfHard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times.Comment

Round count doesn't mean much unless you have some barrel burner. Even then, it's not the round count but the condition of the barrel and everything else that really matters. I've never bought a used gun and even considered "round count" as a factor when figuring out the price.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

Remember that with a semi auto, you can just buy a new barrel and replace most other parts that wear out. you can even get a new slide probably (unless it's like a Ruger where the serial number is on the slide)==================

I love getting old guns! When we examine them for purchase don't we look for bulged barrels, frame cracking, worn and/ or pitted rifling? On the "classics" round count is generally anybody's guess- but is OFTEN still well below the number of rounds the thing still has left in it.
As examples, I'm thinking....Colt Pythons, old 1911s and pre-1911s, 5 screw S&W revolvers, also WWI and WWII weapons. You know...good old stuff!! And all retaining value!!Comment
