M&P9 Considerations

I'm considering getting a S&W M&P 9mm 5" barrel. I test-fired a service model and it has great ergos and shot well. The only thing holding me back right now is 1) what appears to be gritty triggers and 2) the mag disconnect feature.

I shot an M&P range gun (no idea on round count through it) and dry fired a different M&P in a gun shop, and both of them had what I think are best described as gritty triggers. That is, it almost feels like some part of the trigger mechanism is rubbing on the frame during the trigger pull up to the point where the sear is ready to disengage and the hammer will fall.

For those of you who own M&Ps, do the triggers break in after a while? How many rounds does it take? If not, what would you recommend for improved trigger pulls? I am a bit spoiled with the triggers on my revolvers. I just bought a 686 and the trigger breaks like a thin layer of ice. The trigger on these two made me shutter.

Second, is there a way to remove the mag disconnect feature? My XD9 doesn't have it so I assume the XD9 was put on the list prior to 2007 according to the forum sticky.

Mag disconnect feature is easy... lots of information out there. I did mine in about 15 minutes and a BIC Pen spring...

As operator mentioned above, Apex Tactical can help you with the trigger. The M&P9 I bought was a MA state version that had a 12 lb, notchy trigger. Even being my first gun, I knew the trigger was horrible and I expected it after doing my pre-purchase research.

I got the duty/carry kit from Apex (DCAEK). I swapped out the sear and springs, etc. myself with just some very basic tools and now I have about a 5.5 lb trigger that is smooth enough for me. Watch the Apex videos by Randy Lee for step by step install instructions. Depending on how light of a trigger pull you want, there are options to customize the parts you will swap in your gun.

I went into my purchase expecting to add the DCAEK kit ($100) immediately. I am very happy with the results. If you're near the Torrance area, I'd be happy to let you shoot mine.

I got myself the Apex FSS kit. It's a new sear, sear plunger, sear plunger spring, and trigger unit. The new trigger is very Glock-like, and pull comes out to about 4.5 lbs. There's almost no creep, break is clean, and reset is "right there". Whole different gun. And Apex made a video on how to install it. That right there will basically give you the ideal striker fired gun.

There are many ways to remove the MD.

Apex is the way to go to improve the trigger.

Get one(or 3)!!!!!

I bought a $3 spring from speed shooter specialties because I thought the bic pen idea sounded kinda ghetto and asking for trouble.

Once i took everything apart and saw how it worked, I realized I should have just used a bic pen spring.

This and get a trigger job . Apex DCAEK or FSS, Burwell or Bowie come to mind. Most are using Apex triggers and love them.

I installed a forward set sear trigger kit, RAM, and disabled the mag disconnect. Removing the locking block was tough, maybe because the gun is new. Driving the pin into the new trigger was also harder than expected. However, it was a good experience. Plus the trigger is a lot better.

Keep in mind, there are no 5" barrel models of the M&P 9mm on the handgun roster. If you're like me and want the 5", you'll have to source a M&P Pro or 9L and SSE it. I just went through this and will be DROSing my 9 Pro on Monday.

The 9 Pro supposedly has a 4.5lb trigger pull and a comparable trigger to the APEX kit out of the box. I found mine online for $560 and had it shipped to Table Rock Arms for SSE, then to my FFL.

I've heard both ways. Some like the Pro trigger better than the apex kit. I think it's more of a personal judgement than a fact...

I agree with 9mmepiphany. The Apex have a better trigger than the Pro IMO. That's why I purchase the 9L instead and install the Apex kit.
