For me the dog is more of an early warning system and the dog knows where the bad guys are if they are roaming around your house looking for entry. If they insist on coming in the dog won't have a leash inside the house. I was thinking of getting a 20 ga. for my wife and kids, but it might spell trouble, since most of my shotguns are 12 gauge.

I'm with you. No one gets even close to my front door without my dog alerting that someone is there. My dog doesn't sleep at night, she patrols the house, it's a natural instinct in the breed. If I'm not home the dog sleeps even less and is on full on guard mode. All I want is an alert so I can get ready for whatever even if coming out of dead asleep.

We had an attempted home invasion once when I wasn't a gun owner (at a previous residence). It happened around 9 pm at night. They kept on kicking the door. I told my wife to call 911 and out of an adrenaline rush, I yelled through the door (had a blade and bat with me), "Come on! See what happens when you get through."

They stopped and split.....I'm guessing maybe they thought I had a gun (worst case for them)?

        So no....not paranoid IMHO.

It's only paranoia until you're standing face to face with a BG in your living room....then it's preparedness.

You live under someone elses roof - it's their rules, you must respect that. However I feel there is a time where it is warranted. A dangerous situation takes precedence IMO.
