Springfield Armory XD 9

Went to the gun store today for a different reason, but stumbled across this gun. I also saw the compact version but it actually felt heavier to me, and a Glock 19 & 23, but the Glock wasn't as comfortable in my hand.

Just wondering what everyone's opinion on the XD 9 is, the company (SA), etc. Is it reliable? What should it sell for?

I am looking for a gun for home defense and range shooting, however my wife who is 5'8" 115lbs needs be able to handle it as well, without fear.

Is a 9mm enough for home defense? I know some say yes, some say no, but realistically what do you think is the best caliber?

I would appreciate any suggestions or comments. Any other home defense, semi-auto guns I should check out instead?

The xd 9 is a great gun. The price will vary depending on barrel length and features.

As for ammo for hone self defense I am a firm believer that a well trained and frequent range shooter with proper shot placement with a .22 will stop a robber with a .45. I believe its all in the practice and shot placement.

I am making an assumption from.your.post that this may be your first gun purchase?if that is the case may I recommend you rent different handguns and shoot them and.get a real good feel for them in your hands before making a purchase. Better to take.time purchasing a firearm that you are going to be comfortable shooting.rather than an impulsive buy based on looks,price or what we here at calguns say is great or not .

xd is a great gun! they have been on sale for about 400$ with 5 mags holster and mag pouch. turners sells them. there is a fourm going around that say the xd has been around since 1999. it was a gun called a hs2000 from crotia and i guess springfiled started importing them in, but now makes them.

Not my first gun, just first purchase in a long while. While I have shot handguns before, but pretty much all the same caliber. Unfortunately there aren't places to rent around here.

I rented the XD 40 the other night and was quite impressed with it. I like the safety features, the looks and the trigger was pretty good. I shot it quite well. The only thing I didn't like was the sights. They had small dots and they were somewhat hard to see. I'm also considering the Smith and Wesson M&P which has sights I really like. I'm seeing lots of great deals on XD's and M&P's these days.

9mm is a great round for HD. It's cheap to practice with and with some Speer Gold Dot Hollow Points or Federal HST it will have good stopping power as long as the shooter puts their shots on target. I have the 9mm for my wife.

Yeah, I saw the promotion with the 5 mags and holster, however, I think the price is about $525-$550 at the shop I was at today.

Turner's has them on sale right now $399 for the 3 or 4 inch model and $499 for the 5 inch. The 3 free mags offer from Springfield is good till the end of Nov.

I've got an XD9 myself. Great gun, great feel. I have 124 JHP or 147gr JHP loaded up ready to go for SD/HD...for range use I use some 115gr, but mostly the 124gr FMJ.

Great choice, wife and I loved it, we have the subcompact and has less felt recoil than most subcompacts.

9mm will get the job done if you hit the target.
The XD is made in Croatia, imported by Springfield.
Is it reliable - Yes
Should you look at other pistols, of course. You've handled a Glock, try the Smith & Wesson M&P and the Beretta PX4 for something in the plastic style comparable price range. The Smith & Beretta have the capability of changing part of the grips to handle different hand sizes.

A steel gun with a comparable price would be a CZ 75.

A Beretta 92 will be higher priced and is a large gun but is reliable. It is very easy to rack but the controls on the slide are disadvantage, which is why I list the CZ 75 first.

Don't neglect looking at a shotgun for home defense.

Some specific things to be aware of with an XD:

1. The Tactical models (5 inch barrel) are easier to rack than the Service (4 inch) models. Make sure your wife can easily rack whatever you are thinking of purchasing. The longer sight radius will aid in aiming and the longer barrel will do a little to tame muzzle flip. My wife struggles with racking the service model, no problem with the Tactical.

2. There is an achiilles tendon with the XD, the roll pin that retains the firing pin. They can break with extended dry firing without snap caps. It's not a common failure but it does happen - check with the XD forum and you'll see a sticky on how to replace it. I've got 4 XD's, do a lot of dry firing (with snap caps) and have not had a problem.

3. The grip safety is hated by some. I like it. Be aware that you can't rack the gun unless it is depressed. Try racking the slide and locking it open, you'll be shifting your primary hand around the grip while still depressing the grip safety. You can rack the gun one handed (hook the rear sight on your belt, edge of desk or whatever) despite those that claim it can't be done. Just be aware of that.

4. If you don't like the stock sights, you'll be paying someone to replace them. They are a nightmare to change yourself.

5. On the XD (not the XDM - but not on the roster) you have to pull the trigger to do the field strip. The XD haters scream about that, how unsafe. Shh...don't tell anybody, but you have to pull the trigger on a Ruger Mark I /II/III to do the field strip.

Have fun and be safe with whatever you choose.

I have 2 XDs, a 4 inch in .40 and a 9mm SC. I also have a 9,, XDm. All are good shooters and I have never had a failure in any of them. I use the SC for daily carry, 13 rds of Speer Gold Dots.
