AR Pistols.. practical?

I wouldn't call them practical in CA. Maybe in a free state. That doesn't stop me from having two. It's as close to the entry weapons I used to be able to play with and as close to an SBR as I can have in the People's Republik.

Recoil isn't an issue. Neither is recoil management.

Muzzle brakes, compensators and so forth are legal since an AR pistol doesn't have a detachable magazine.

They arent popular out of state, people just do SBR's.

I dont think I have seen any since moving to TX.

I wonder if people would use them for home defense.

I used to be totally against AR pistols, thinking they were a complete waste of time & money. However, the AR pistol bug recently bit me so I'm currently building one up the way I want it from an 80% lower.

While my G19 w/pre-bans & mag extensions is my primary HD gun, I feel like this could be my SHTF gun to take with me. I've also been caught up lately on the BOB setups and preparedness stuff, so I've often thought about a SHTF gun to use. While I used to have a G26 to go in my BOB, to compliment the G19 and use the same mags, I've decided to go a step further. IMO, if there is a real SHTF situation where all hell breaks loose, little to no police helping your area, and you're really in it for survival (regardless what the reason is and legalities here), then swapping the bullet button and removing the mag blocks takes only minutes and then you're ready to rock & roll all "non-CA" style .


I got off topic a bit there, but point being I can seen them being used for some practical purposes. Not many, but some.

Practical depending on what you want it for. I wanted a toy so I built one on a 80% lower.

In what realistic situation a would a SIG556 pistol (WITH NORMAL magazine release and std magazines) would come really handy?

Or is it just for fun?

It does bring huge crowds at the range. Especially indoors where you can see the fireball.

Who has weighed their AR pistol builds? I'm curious to know the weights compared to a 16" rifle and how much 9" of barrel and a stock actually weighs.

Im trying to sell my "lightweight" build at 6lbs to fund the rest of my pistol. I have my bench gun and the pistol will replace the lightweight AR (i hope).
