Sig guys, seriously what is the difference?

So doing a little searching on the Sig forum on my new 226 I am finding there are guys that will flat out not own one 226 vs another. So what is the scoop on the different Sig 226's? It looks like there are German and US models, internal and external extractor models, stainless, carbon steel, Nitron ect..

I remember Kimber had massive reliability problems with the type II models and their external extractors. I have never heard of a 226 having problems with theirs and am confused as to why they would currently produce 2 designs of the same gun.

What is a better gun and why?

    Thanks, Sammy

A lot of it's historic. They made them all in Germany originally and when they started ramping up production in the US it happened in stages. Frankly I don't think most people would notice any difference if they hadn't been exposed to the Internet...

I wouldnt worry about it budd. There quality pistols, in my opinion, the Cadillac of pistols, not pretty on the eyes but they are machines! In any case, QC has gone slightly down from the sound of it and some people arent happy with some models using the plastic guide rod. That being said, I havent ever found an issue with any of them. Dont dwell on it, if you pick up a 226 and love the feel go for it. If its used just check the gun for function and look at the feed ramp, wear and such.

When it comes right down to it the German ones seem to have slightly higher resale value but honestly I havent any problems with any type, whether it was all German models or Exeter ones. There custom shop helped me out greatly this year. Dont try and get to into the whole external vs internal extractor debate, its way to divisive.

Carbon steel is older pre stainless steel slides which have nitron on them. Some people say they point better than the nitron coated stainless steel ones. The non carbon steel ones are done on CNC machines. I found no difference. The trigger is slightly smoother on the newer ones but other than that, I dont find to many differences that would sway my opinion.

I used to have both the West German and USA Sig P226. USA P226R was heavier but West German P226 had a better trigger since it was broken in. Regardless of the country of origin it is still a Sig.

I cant tell the difference, I have a 220 from the US and a 226 from germany. In my opinion they are both great guns, reliable and will eat any ammo I feed into them.

The older generation Sig 226 has carbon steel, pressed, two piece slide VS later stainless steel, one piece slide.

I personally like the earlier Sigs better. I like the pressed slide tightly fit on the frame instead of stainless slide that is loosely and some time rattle a bit on the frame. But functionally, there will not be much noticeable different.

All I know is my USA 226 has never had a FTF/FTE in 1000's and 1000's and 1000's of rounds. My Sig feels better to me than my 2 Glocks and shoots better. I really need to sell my Glocks.

my preference is for the w german Sig Sauer P series handgun; just personal preference. much of that personal preference is simply tied in to my long history with the w german offerings.

Thanks for the help. I am heading out to try it out tomorrow and can't wait. I had my FFL put some Trijicon night sights on it and it is loaded up and ready to go.

I hope it shoots POA like my other guns. Trijicon did not offer any sights options so I don't know what to expect.

From what I remember my 220 had a 12 o'clock hold which is less than ideal for percision shooting. Thanks again!!

Op, remember, sig sights are combat sights. You cover the target with the front post (that is how my 220 is anyway)

Yep, I called Sig customer service and got that talk. They are designed for defensive work but all I shoot is paper and expired canned goods. Do you know how Trijicon sets up their sights?

No I do not. One more thing, if its a brand new weapon, their might be some jamming issues the first 500 rds or so, until its broke in. Mine would fft/fte. Clean it good FIRST and lube it good, it will cut down on problems. The only good thing about the break in is that it gave me some practice in malfunction drills. That was with my 220 anyway. Friend of mine has a 226 blackwater and the only problems it gave him brand new was he didnt oil it. It ran flawlessly after he oiled it. Hopefully you have the same experience as he did. Let us know how it goes.
