The 295 has been replaced by first the SLS (rotating hood) and the ALS (ejection port locking block)...both are released via thumb pressure (just moving in opposite directions)

And the 2955, which the OP linked as "nearest thing" is an updated design of the 295 mentioned above. These invariably are illustrated with Glocks on board, hence the wrap around the front strap. There is a passive retention device inside which engages the trigger guard and the purpose of the strap is to keep the gun from being pulled forward off the passive device.

I used a 295 way back when with Gen 1 and Gen 2 S&W autos. I was never fully comfortable with it and converted to Safariland 070 level 3 holsters and used those with full confidence for the rest of my career.

The newer SLS and ALS holsters are the shizz. I've tried both and they are very natural. If I was still an active LEO working the street I'd be using one of them for sure.

I will contemplate the level 3 model your talking about, but as far as the ALS and SLS, they look a bit to fancy for me. I'm sorta looking for as basic as it gets holster but with some form retention through a button or strap, I just dont want to over do it. I'm used to Serpas so this would be a change.

...they are both pretty basic holsters...their strength is that they use a more natural drawing motion to free up the retention.

I always found the 070 slower with a somewhat counter intuitive motion required...besides requiring three separate motions to release


I used the Serpa for quite a while and the SLS was a easy transition, with the ALS just needing just a bit more adaption in the hands approach for a smooth release

I'm sorta between them now (ALS, SLS). They both have forms of retention, I guess its just which one is cheaper at this point.

The ALS holster is a wonderful system! I wouldn't waste the time with the hood unless you needed the extra retention. The 6378 is an awesome holster for general range use, concealment, and competition and can be had for around $40. They are sued lined, leather/kydex hybrid, paddle holsters that are IMHO the best bang for the buck holster on the market.

As far as old style leather thumb breaks, I carry in a DeSantis and also have/use Bianchi, and Doug Hume pancake holsters. They are all good leather, but for general purpose, not as nice as the Safariland 6378 nor are they as fast.

The 6378 comes with a belt loop plate if you don't want to run them as a paddle.

I'm liking the ALS since it just as the button on the left side to unlock it (sorta like the Serpa). I may just get that one. I'm going based off the pictures posted.

Yup, at the moment I am, there are only 2 gun shops here and I only usually go to one, but I'll check the one over by the Sheriffs department to see if they got it. I'm pretty much set on the brand though, I like what I see, I figure that will fit my Glocks and Sigs, but need to find a thumbstrap for my model 66.
