Colt Python 4" blue help me!

Ok so one of my friends dad is selling a Colt Python 4" Blue, It looks brand new, no box of course, the only damage are hairline scratches on the cylinder from rubbing. I also checked the numbers and this python is from 1978... and he only wants $500! but here's the catch, its not registered in his dads name. Apparently his friend passed away leaving his son with the inheritance, so the son sold my friends dad all the guns, which they didn't transfer through an FFL, so the gun belongs to a dead guy.. And the son moved away so now theres probably a 0% chance of getting back in touch.
What should I do!? I really want it so I can have a matching set of 4" blue pythons..

is there any way i can get it transferred in my name legally?

somebody please help me with this!

Put the question in the FFL section. Someone over there may be able to help you.

Isn't '78 well before they required handgun registration? If so, why would it be registered? You can do what G17 said, or you could go to an FFL and do a PPT.

the only problem with that is what if i decide to sell it? Its not very easy to sell an unregistered firearm..

Actually, there is a way to legally do it. I researched it after your last post. It's the little known Clownpuncher clause that the DOJ doesn't like to advertise. Basically, you buy it and I'll have you fill some paperwork out and I'll hold the gun. The only problem is, it is a 20 year wait before you get it back.

But seriously, check with an FFL. Lots of em on here that are helpful.

If it were me, I would buy it and worry about it later, if at all. But I'm typically one to ride the gray area of the law.

Unless you plan on putting it on a CCW permit or some other thing to bring attention to you having the gun, I wouldn't sweat it. As long as you know it hasn't been stolen or used in a crime I think you'll be good.

One should consider their age. At one time you could purchase handguns from a private party without registering them. So if the person is old enough and the gun is old enough, it is possible that it was transferred legally some time ago.

That story is hard to sell when you are 21 and found with an unregistered handgun.

As long as the transfer (son to friend's dad) in question took place before 1991 then there was never any "registration" it's perfectly legal to PPT. If it happened after, there would be no way to know *(edit to add, as long as it's never been DROS'd in "modern" times and has registration to someone else) and the PPT would probably go through just fine, although there would have been an illegal transfer at one point, but you aren't responsible for that. The DOJ is happier to get the guns "papered" than to prosecute someone for an innocent mistake years ago, as long as there's no chance that it's stolen or anything like that. If you don't go for it,

Thats the reasoning I was trying to remember..... 91 they started requiring PPT's be registered.

The way I see it, your friends dad got the gun before 91, no way to prove otherwise. Go PPT it with him, you should be good to go.

Right. As long as you are sure the gun isn't stolen just go down to your LGS and do the PPT.
                          Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.
